Hello
ODK history lovers
Whirlwind mowers were made by
LJ Phillips and Company of
Melbourne.
Their original products were commercial size – with tractor-drawn
tri-blade slashers and smaller walk-behind rotary scythes (as they
were called) in 20” and then 24” sizes.
By the mid-1950s, Phillips entered the domestic rotary market,
and we see the fist small rotary mowers – the
18” Sabre (a sort
of USA Lawnboy design) and a heavy-duty
Whirlwind 18”.
By 1957 it becomes clear that Whirlwind had Australian
‘toecutter’ designs. These were pressed steel bases in 18” and 19” widths.
This
brochure represents the Whirlwind line-up at about
1960, and it’s
a sophisticated brochure too; with photographic and colourised images.
The front cover screams the ‘swinging sixties’ and the Aussie lifestyle of
leisure and fun. Brilliant!
