just got this mower and the starter setup has me stumped,
It seems the starter rope goes down the side of the flywheel. sidestart maybe?
i have never seen this motor before.
how would i go about rewinding the starter?

First the engine numbers would be helpful in looking up the IPL. I haven't seen one here with that tank design. Could be one the uses an older vertical pull starter system that I see on Snapper push mowers here.

Shouldn't be harder to rewind the rope just need to look up that system in the service manual I hope.

there is one on Gumtree at the moment Massport Lawnmower

Side start, its underneath the tank. there should be a round black sticker over the top of the mounting bolt which i believe is left hand threaded.
I've never re-roped one so good luck and keep us posted on how it goes.

this seems to be the problem. i will see if i can bend it back into place. as i dont have another side starter of this type.

Apart from your issue these were quite a good engine. I've got one on my Masport that I took off my Brother-in-Laws failing rusted out Morrison and it's been running without issue on my chassis for 10 or so years and prior to that it was running faultlessly on the Morrison for around 15 years. At that time span it can't be too bad ?
