Hi Guys.
Been a long time..
I have recently been restoring an old greenfield ride on mower 12-32 model i have replaced the drive belt and today i fitted the cutter drive belt- gt1985 belt after about 20 mins of cutting i noticed that it had just stopped cutting? i looked around and found the belt snapped.. could this have been a fitment error ?
or should i be looking at something else?
would appreciate any help with this issue and would like to thank-you in advance for helping !

I would be looking at all the pulleys and make sure that they line up as well as checking the bearings for a start. cheers2

Thanks for the fast reply.. I will certainly have a good look at the alignment. . Do you know if anyone on here has a pic of how it is ment to fit?.
Once I get it right I can post detailed pics for all to see.

Hi NeedaFixin, and a warm welcome to the forum. It is always nice to welcome anothe Greenfield owner on board, as we all like to learn new things and tinker here. wink

Hopefully grumpy will chime in here with the information you require to see how it all fits together, however do check the alignment as Bruce has recommended. wink
cheers

Is it possible that it could be a faulty Belt?
My mate said even if the bearings/pulleys where buggered it wouldn't just snap a belt after 20 mins of mowing !
all the pulleys seem to move fine and as far as i can see they are in alignment?

There are several ways a belt can break - often you can tell which one applied by inspecting it. Essentially though, if it happens to a new belt it is one of three things: too much tension, overheating, or rubbing very hard against a fixed object. Excess tension is caused by seized pulley bearings, misalignment, or incorrect installation (usually the last of these three). Overheating is caused by slipping or bending on too sharp a radius.

It is quite unlikely your belt was defective, unless you have used a washing machine belt instead of an industrial one (if you did that it would indeed wear out immediately).

You said the belt "snapped". If you mean it broke rather than cooked, the problem is probably incorrect routing of the belt, so that the automatic tensioner is not working. Usually it also involves having had trouble getting the belt on, and having to lever things around to get it fitted, and in the end it could be twanged like a bow-string. Is the cutter belt loose in the declutched position, as it should be? It declutches by slackening the belt so that it cannot drive the cutter.

While we don't have a manual for your specific model, here is a later model showing the cutter belt routing:

You didn't by any chance run the belt around the outside of the guide pins did you?

It wasn't the cutter belt it was the gt 1985 belt that drives the cutter belt.

All we have on that model is an illustrated parts list, and it doesn't help with the design of the primary belt drive. Unless someone is familiar with it, or has the full owner manual for it, all I can suggest is that you figure out whether there was a very high tension on that belt, or it was running hard against something.

If you post some pictures we might be slightly further ahead.

Thanks For your time and information ,
Turns out the main problem was that the clutch pulley bearing had seized and eventually spun the bolt off and the pulley had dropped off ... the belt just ground on the bolt until it snapped.. all fixed now mowed for about 30 mins and all good except for the bloody rain!! typical.
Love the Greenfields bit of a challenge to work on but awesome once you get it right.
Tanks again guys
