Hi Guys, I have a Rockwell RS8021 mower but am unsure of what engine they used.. Trying to get it running, I figure I'd best grab a manual of some form or reference for it.. or at the very least for the carburetor.. Any ideas what the engine.. or Carburetor.. might be ? There's 2x numbers stamped into the engine block.. though one of the number I can't make out.. it looks like each letter/number was stamped with little dents (like brail, but opposite).. but they're very very close to each other.. The other number is ☆G65110720436 (yep, it has a star stamped next to it) ... google tells me nothing. ![[Linked Image from i998.photobucket.com]](http://i998.photobucket.com/albums/af101/Widget1983/IMAG0002_zpskbmkf8ex.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i998.photobucket.com]](http://i998.photobucket.com/albums/af101/Widget1983/IMAG0007_zpso4kbbvfq.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i998.photobucket.com]](http://i998.photobucket.com/albums/af101/Widget1983/IMAG0010_zpszyvtmmqv.jpg)

same as any SANLI or gardeners choice machine . called in these here pages as a chonda engine . so most things are almost the same ....... full choke to start it and almost always a carb full of water with that style of tank on it , a lot of late rovers and scott bonnar (new green p.o.s ) had them too . a litle help i hope ? carb is a kiehin copy , not sure of that spelling though , almost always a blocked main and idle jet caused by rust and or water dave

Thanks vccomm .. so being a 'chonda'.. is that short for Chinese Honda (Honda Clone) ? Are they (and the carb) somewhat identical? If I locate a diagram for the proper carb.. would it help with referencing the cloned carb ? or are there differences ?

Thanks vccomm .. not sure what the cause is yet, but the previous owner said he was using it then it just died, then couldn't get it to run again. Haven't done much testing yet, was planning on getting a reference diagram 1st so I know what I'm looking at. I did a compression test (never done one before.. so got to use my newish compression tester :)) .. got a reading of 55psi .. not sure if that's good/bad.. what is considered good/bad for a 4 stroke mowers compression ? Going to take the carb apart soon, inspect and give it a good clean.

Just put the carb in an ice cream container or similar container and pull it apart in it so that you don't drop or loose bits, saves so much frustration

or a nice clean large rag . as it shouldnt take too long really , just be carefull when taking out the emulsion tube . sometimes they are stuck by fuel gummed up . good dose of carb cleaner does the trick and let it soak in a little . but NOT on the plastic idle jet !!!! it has a tiny hole too , even a bread tie wire only just fits through and a good blow out of all the tiny holes in the venturi espsecialy the one thats directed at the idle jet . easy really just patients and not really much to lose just be sure all the gaskets are there and in good nick or make new ones did it come with an ex army catcher too ? look great cleaned up mate

Main reason for working on carbies in a container is if something falls from the carby, needle, float pin etc it doesn't drop on the ground or roll off the table

I'm worried alright, Obama and his VP are having an emergency meeting with the Federal Reserve, this is unprecedented in American history, so sure I'm worried

good luck widget, you'll mostly waste your time on those things made to work for a short time, not to go through a work shop. hence so many thrown out!!

Thanks Squizzy. Picked it up to try get it working, no matter the quality.. more or less for a bit of practice. If I can get it running, might try sell it off, make a few bucks and buy another mower...
[EDIT] Anyone happen to know what gap the valves need for these engines ?

About all we can do, is give the clearances for the Honda engine series it was most likely copied from. That's the 120-160cc OHV vertical shaft models.
For the GXV120/GXV140/GXV160 series, these are Intake 0.13-0.17mm [0.005-0.007"]; Exhaust 0.18-0.22mm [0.007-0.009"]. Both at TDC on compression stroke. These are US market specs, but should be close enough.

Thanks Moderator Gadge .. is it best, when adjusting valve clearance, to get them closer to the lower, Mid or high end of spec? Do valves loosen up over time or tighten ? Thanks again

G'day Widget,
Always set at the high end, as the fastest wear occurs at the valve face and seat, and this will make them close up.
