Hi all, Im going to be rebuilding our old Victa push mower. Im hoping some of you can help me get some info on it first. No one in our family seems to remember when it was actually bought(owned from new) and i was hoping someone can tell me what year they think it is? Is there a way to find out the year model from part numbers etc? How do you all go about redoing the chassis? Paint, powdercoat, or other? Can the stickers be replaced, or is this not done on rebuilds? Where is the best place to get any and all parts for these mowers in Aus? alot of the part listing just say for 'early' or 'late' motors. Are the all essentially the same or something? Does my year model not matter in this case?

Hi to unknownVicta, and a warm welcome to the forum.  we need one of our Victa gurus to chime in here and give you some information on your machine. On the top of the plastic air filter cover or adjacent to it, there may be a white sticker with the Victa code on it. This can give information on your model....can you find it? Hi to unknownVicta and gizmo,gizmo, that you very much for that research, from those links we can say that this machine is a (approx) 1997 Victa Commando, Powertorque engine and G4 primer bulb carby. unknownVicta, the white sticker we are looking for looks something like this:

Usually that sticker is found on the air filter housing that is mounted on the handle bar. This is the black housing that should also have your throttle control.

Had a look, its long gone. Unless its on the inside or something? Does anyone know if the chassis is alloy? if not, then what? Looks like mine has had some smacks on the nose haha. Going to have fun working it back to straight...

Those stickers do wear away over time. They are not very robust. Your chassis is a pressed steel base, certainly not alloy. You should be able to panel beat it back to shape without much trouble. Any cracks or rust repairs can be done with a mig welder.

The sticker wont tell us much more than what we already see in the picture. My guess would be it is a CS201*(where the Asterisk could be any letter, i believe denoting the year or model era). The real question is what exactly do you want to do with the mower, freshen it up to use as a daily driver, or a full resto to keep as a mantle piece. To what extent do you want to restore it; ground up nut and bolt restoration, or a repaint, a thourough clean and a once over to make sure everything is functional. Depending on what you want to do, and whats damaged and needs replacing will determine where you start and end. We can also determine the year of your mower as it's cast into the engine block directly underneath the carby, although the carby will have to come off in order to see it. As for decals im not aware if they're available but a call to a reputable Victa dealer, or preferably a Victa gold dealer, will determine their availability.

I wouldnt say every nut and bolt resto, but not far off it either. Will be replacing most things i imagine. It will still be used, but rarely. I live on acreage and use my Victa ride on for most things. Could actually get away with not using the push mower anywhere if i had to. Its more of a resto to its former glory, get it looking and running brand new again. It was bought for my father for a fathers day gift, and he has since passed. The sentimental value is really the only driving force in restoring it.

Started the tear down this arvo. Chassis in great shape really. No rust holes etc like i was worried about. Will probably finish taking apart the chassis and send it off to get sandblasted, and then powdercoated/painted a nice bright red. If you wanted to date the engine as Bigted said in a previous post.On the engine block where the carby goes you will see some cast numbers as well as some that have been stamped.The date should be there.
Here for a good time,not a long time.

Had a quick look. I can only see one marking in that area and it says "D 98" Is this it? I was looking for something longer, like 5-10 digits like most engine/chassis numbers on anything.

That's the number you're looking for. Its a 98 model. You wont find a serial number.
As for paint or powdercoating it's your choice.

All the places on google focus on car bodies and heavy machinery etc. First one i called started at $500 and goes up. Im affraid that sort of cost out weighs the whole build. I've done a few of these but never sandblasting and powder coating. A good scrub with a wire wheel on a grinder, a rub all over, etch primer, hi-fill, another rub down, undercoat and then finish off in 2 pac. they come up a treat, and far less expensive than sandblasting and powder coating. With my coffee table Victa18 Special, I decided grit blasting was the way to go for me because of the original condition of the base and ancillary parts. Here it is after being sandblasted, primed and painted. It was thrown in with some other work being done, the place normally works with massive mining/earth moving equipment, so its nothing show worthy. They just blew some colour on it and its done. So there are a couple of small run marks in it that i want to deal with before putting parts back on it. Maybe throw a clear coat over it to give the colour some depth. Painted some of the other smaller parts at home in gloss black while this was getting done, and will get the underside of the chassis coated with Rhino Linings in coming days. More pics to come soon.

Ive got some questions, not sure if anyone here can be of help?
It has some run marks in it and im not sure what to do with them. Can i simply sand them down? How fine grit paper etc? Also id like to throw some clear coat over the top of it, can this be done just with a can of clear-coat? Not even sure if you can get cans of clear-coat. In any case, does the clear need to be sanded smooth also? On the nose of the mower there is raised lettering that i want to paint silver. Do i need to sand the red back, or just mask around it and hit it with a can of silver before clear goes down?
