Is there a service/workshop manual, (preferably in Adobe PDF format) available for this two stroke model, (Super 600, circa 1980's) in particular, troubleshooting regarding starting problems, thanks.

lanceolata, What have you done so far? I would suggest the following things should be done: 1.Remove any fuel from tank and replace with fresh petrol. 2.Replace spark plug with new one. 3.Check for spark plug by holding plug against cylinder head and pulling starter rope to see if you get a blue spark across the electrode. As to the pdf file we have some but not the complete manual only certain areas so as to help people with problems and specifications. Thanks for the reply, I have tried all the operations you mentioned including changing the float plastic needle and housing, (the cap which includes the rubber fuel primer). When the spark plug and above parts were first replaced it started first time but as been progessively harder to start. The plug remains dry even after several primings and pulls with the starter. I've tried putting a small quantity of fuel directly into the combustion chamber and this did work eventually. I took the cap off the carb, the one which retains the springs and the innards look as if they could do with a clean, hence the request for help with removing it via pdf service repair pages. It appears to be a problem with fuel not reaching the chamber does this seem a likely answer to you.

Lanceolata re your not sucking in fuel problem Have you checked the compression? If not take out the de-compreeor unit and screw in an old spark plug to blank off the hole and check if you can pull the motor over easy or not. You can turn ther motor over by hand to do this .but take the plug lead OFF first If you have very litle compression you will also have very little suction . I f you have very little suction you will not get the venturi effect accross the jet Fuel Jet that is, to suck the fuel into the motor Faulty oils seal or seals also can cause the same problem . I fyou the compression is low try putting a very small amt of oil into the spark plug hole and turn thre motor over a few times to spread the oil film around the cylinder wall , oyr the plug back in and try starting it Joe

Thanks to Victa man and Joe Brown for your replies. I've taken off the carb and cleaned the innards, jet etc. There is some wear in one spot on the poppet valve, would this affect starting? Also would it be worth replacing the rubber diaphram in case it's not sealing properly? There is also a good fuel flow when I disconnected the fuel line and turned on the tap. As you have propbably gathered it's still not starting. I will try Mr. Brown's suggestion regarding the compression leakage. The mower is where I work part-time, so I'm not in every day and I have to work on it when I can after I've done the odd few dozen other jobs. I will let you know any progress. Thanks again.

lanceolata, Yes I would replace the diaphram. The other thing that you could check as well is the bottom seal by removing the blade plate and feel if there is any moisture around the crankshaft at the bottom of the motor (this will cause the mower being hard to start). Regards, Victa Man

Hi lancelota You could also consuder taking off the muffler and having a look at the piston and the rings up thru the exhaust port .see if the rings are seized in and or lots of score marks around the pistn Joe

Hi Lancealotta Did you sort yor problem out yet. You mentioned the poppet valve had some wear ?? Most unusual. The poppet is shaped at manufacture like this and for different model engines should be fitted in a certain way Does it have letters a B C on it Joe

Hi Joe I've tried the valve in position b and c with no joy as yet. The work on the Victa as had to go on the back burner for a while until I can get some time and funds to look at the problem again. There does, however, seem to be sufficent compression when the engine is turned over which I had doubts about before. I haven't got around to changing the diaphram or valve as yet, (it also may require a new starter gear ring or starter unit and the funds are restricted where I work so I have to tread carefully). Thanks for your support and I'll let you know of any progress in the future. Bob

Hi Lancealotta Did you check the diapragm in the decompressor. .You can do this by sucking on the pipe and it should close the valve easily. Sometimes the diafragm will get burnt and get a big hole in it,then wont close the valve to keep the engine running . The burning is caused by running the engine at a very low idle for a long periodas the valve is popping open and shut the heat from the engine, which is considerable, will go up past tyhe valve and heat up the diapragm and bake it up and burn holes in it Regards Joe
