A bloke dropped off a Homelite trimmer yesterday, I don't want to waste much time on it, it starts up fine but will only run for 5 seconds and it stops, prime it again and it does the same thing. I assume the diaphragm is not pumping and I don't have any kits for this type. Any other thoughts or do I just get a new carby for it?

Hi Norm,

If it's the one in the image below it's not worth fixing as the starters always break..

I would make sure the plug is good remove the air filter cover and start the trimmer and when it
starts to cut out spray some fuel or starter fluid into the carby and if it still dies you know it's the
coil.

Usually the fuel hoses need replacing if they haven't been done for a while as you can get very minor air leaks and
the fuel filter could be blocked ,occasionally the primer bubble needs replacing even though it looks ok.

I mostly can't even give them away for free when they work well because everyone
here have good trimmers and don't want old 2 stroke trimmers, they have Honda or battery operated trimmers these days.

Mower shops were charging $120.. for a trimmer service 5 years ago.

Cheers
Max.

Hi Max.
I usually refuse to even look at them these days but I felt a bit sorry for this bloke because he got 4 of them from Market place. I got one running for him and I will put a new carby on this one but as you say pointless wasting time on them. Mower shops charging $120 for a service, I bet they didn't get too many people prepared to get them fixed, but I understand why they would need to charge that sort of money

It is hard to repair anything that is low cost to start with. I kinda believe manufacture does this low pricing intentionally to keep us from repairing things. I just killed two Stihl handheld blower due to parts costing as much as replacement unit.

I thought after customer left them that maybe I could fix the el cheapo for my own use. No such luck as it turn out to be the connecting rod bearing on the crankshaft and the crank itself cost nearly 120 usd for a 159 usd blower. The other one has a worn out PNC and that is nearly 3/4 of the cost the replacement unit.

Here I can't even make anything on walk behind mower for the same reasons.

Anything to do with dealing with the public is a waste of time, I'm just trying to clear a lot of the stuff I have here and what is left will be going to the scrapper

I'm not sure if any one here can be making money on walk behind petrol mowers because of
the time it takes to sell one mower ,seems to be at least a month to sell one mower at half
the price it should sell for.

The last mower I sold was only 5 years old ,hadn't had much use ,serviced before selling and sold
at a third of the price I would get a few years ago for the same mower.

People don't believe anything you tell them about what you're selling on ads ,the last buyer
I had to show him how the mower cut grass by cutting the front lawn, then he said I'II let
you know if I decide to buy the mower ,then sat in his car in the street for an hour and a half
before saying he'd decided to buy the mower.

The next day he messages me to tell me how good the mower is and how easily the front yard was cut
with this mower and to let him know if I had any more mowers because he would buy more.

Yes Norm ,that's why I only sold repaired mowers and never repaired customers old mowers unless
it was a neighbor or someone you know, they can waste your time too much if you continually repair
equipment on the cheap for them.

Cheers
Max.
