Hi all

The 2 mowers in the centre came with the Sunbeam I recently picked up. The one on the left is clearly badged a victa on the front body sticker. Model number on air filter cover is mn369AO. What would be the name of this machine and the year ?. The other has a Lawnmaster sticker on the body and says to use model V170 for parts reference. Would it be a mayfair ? Both the bodies look the same but the Lawnmaster has the 2 raised GT look stripes that some of the Victa/Sunbeams have. What year would this machine be ?. Looking from the rear the Lawnmaster has the spark plug offset in the head and the Lawnmaster has no primer bulb on the carby end cap, the other does.

Thanks in advance for your expert commentary.
Happy new year
Regards
wce

G-day we,
the mower on the right in the frontal view is a 125 going by the offset plug. The one without the dress cowl is a 160 and I'm pretty sure the Corvette is the old 125 (which has a central plug) as it appears to be pre-1967: the year they introduced the 160.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

Hello wce

This is an interesting topic you post.

This topic is about the two centre mowers: centre left, centre right.
I date to the mid 1970s (right mower, 125cc) and late 1970s (left, 160cc). -
but the crankcase numbers should tells us more here.

Also, a good clean and more images would be grande.

A good starting point must be the understanding of stencil and
store branded mowers...

https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/u...model-the-first-mayfairs-c1965-1968.html
https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=72163

Sometimes, almost identical (except for the name sticker) mowers
were stencil or store brands. It's a bit confusing here, when one
remembers that this chassis was used over about a decade and a half,
and was store-branded with, conceivably, a hundred different names.

It was also stencil branded using Victa's name, but supplied to various
stores. Such was the power of the Victa brand. However, the Mayfair
(and its other aliases), was never part of the Victa range.

In fact, the first Mayfair - of the mid 1960s - never mentioned Victa!
I have written about why that was so [links above).

Research in this error is problematic - because 'Lawnmaster' was not
trade-marked to any one company here. Although, in your case,
we know these were Victa Mayfairs. But ...

Type in 'lawnmaster' in the blue search box, and you will see what I mean.
I have written about a classic vintage 1950s AUS 'Lawnmaster' and a classic
vintage 1960s and beyond NZ reel mower.

Here,my best guess is that the centre-right machine was a store brand.
I know the Chain store, Eric Anderson, was claiming that the 'Lawnmaster'
was made exclusively for them from the early 1970s.

The centre-left mower is a stencil - sold to various store using the Victa
brand, but not part of the Victa range.

I don't think I have done a great job at explaining this.
Could someone step in and do a Python fish-slapping dance.
Happy to be the recipient. grin

Hope this helps.

G'day folks,
CyberJack has explained a bit about the Victa 'storebrand mowers, so I'll just add that the V170 'Lawnmaster' is a 1975-6 model.

I can't narrow down the vintage of the other one any further than he has, as that model number isn't listed in the Victa 'quick parts finder' which is my usual reference for Victa-made mowers of that era.

For reference, these are the 'M' series Mayfair/storebrand models which are listed there;

Hi all
Gave the pair a bit of a clean, there are some positives about not cleaning years of fuel spills and layers of grime off the mower deck. The finish on the Victa deck under the tank area is like new.
Crank case numbers Lawnmaster 760205. Victa, unfortunately the 4th and fifth numbers are not clear as only the very top section of the stamping is there but I think it is
035 then possibly 90 or 00 then 3866.

Cheers

I would love to find that colour hammered paint for a high arch base I'm fixing.
