I have a Briggs and Stratton Model 10T603-0146-H1-1109095 Built in 2011.
I have recently had a surging issue and opted to replace the whole carby and tank assembly (from ebay) as the existing tank was a little worse for wear. With a little tweaking it bolted straight on. The engine starts first pull then it just hits max RPM. I have no control over RPM with the cable, with only the option to rotate the lever so that contact is made with the kill switch.
Has anyone got any suggestions as to why it might be doing this. I have attached a picture of how it is currently set-up, and i'm curious as to whether I have the spring in the right place. Additionally, should the governor control rod have a "spring" type action or it is not under any tension when the engine is off.
Hi Mattfnq88 and all, In your image it looks like the linkage rod is hitting the cowl before the throttle can fully return if this is the case just rebend the linkage rod so you have clearance. Cheers Max.
Ive just had a look and that rod can move freely. Using my fingers I can move the rod back and forth and the butterfly flag rotates from open to closed. Should that rod have any resistance?
Start the motor then with a screw driver hold the butterfly in the mostly closed position and see if the engine idles if it does relieve tension on the spring by bending the linkage arm closer to the carbies butterfly if you still need less tension in the spring stretch one coil out from the spring.
It is a real balancing act to get the spring tension correct the spring has to allow the butterfly to close to get the idle correct, which is when the fan flag is held open by the fan, opening the throttle should increase the revs and then if more revs are needed the governor should take over as the motor comes under load, the revs drop, the flag closes in and the revs then rise as the butterfly is opened by the flag/rod
I have not had the cowl off my motor for a while but I thought the series 500 158cc Briggs motor had a internal governor. (engine on red base is a Quantum)
I think the model posted is off a little 10T602-0146-H1 Yes this has an internal governor. First make sure the throttle vane is in place and and there is binding the governor link then do a static governor adjustment. This should take care of the problem provide that the governor hasn't failed.
