Hi, I've got this chonda and it was seen to be leaking oil at the breather pipe. I dismantled it and made sure the drain hole in the PCV area was clear but it still leaks oil. Is it possible the PCV valve itself needs replacing or is it more likely that the drain is blocked. Would over filling with oil cause this too?
I re-checked the oil level and it is not over-filled. The drain is clear and the mesh is clean. The PCV valve looks worn where the cover "dimple" makes contact with it. I turned the valve over so that the underside of the valve is now on the top as that part is not worn. On starting the engine it again leaked oil at a pretty good rate. I am thinking now that crankcase pressure must be too high for some reason. Any suggestions?
I have seen a youtube video where this is sometimes caused by a damaged head gasket but I think this mower runs too well for that to be the cause - starts first pull and has plenty of power. So, still looking for ideas.
Actually if it is like some the Briggs that I work on it could be. The Briggs even with a leaking head gasket can run very well but they consume excessive oil as the blow by product is fed through the carburetor and burned. Most time they don't even smoke, just reports of excessive oil usage.
A simple leak down test could tell if it is a head gasket or worn cylinder causing the excessive crankcase pressure. When preforming a leak down on an OHV you do want the valve off so you listen to the push rob galley for leaks.
Thanks. I pulled the head off but everything is OK. I think it must be rings-oil ring. I don't know the torque setting for the head gasket bolts. Any idea?
