Hi,
I have a John Deere STX38 ride on mower that has trouble engaging gears.
I pulled the cover off the box and found nothing obvious but could reproduce the fault so it appears to be the internal gear selector keys not engaging. There appears to be no damage/wear on them or the inside of the gears.
Do they loose there spring? This may cause this fault.
I found some of these in the shop but looking at the manual and the parts in the shop they appear to be different as longer in the thicker section.
The ones in the shop are the: 792089A
Looking at the picture in the parts manual mine appears to be the: 792123A. There are four of them.

Are these to be the likely fault?
Anything else I should check?

Bruce: can you get these for me?

Thanks!

Bruce, had a look at the manual and looked at all the spots that it showed a model no and couldn't see any model numbers in those spots. It just has the patent number in the top of the housing being:
4.480.501
4.103.566
RE32.125
Not sure if it helps?
5 speed peerless transaxle.
Top centre input, external brake on rhs and gear selector on top left.
Would pictures help?
Any other way to identify it?

Thanks.

Looking at the manual again, it looks like a 920 or 930 series.
Can't really see anything that will let me determine between these two...

Chris,

You should have an ID plate which is near the brake disk in a small rectangle area. Until I have correct information on the gearbox model I will be unable to help as the models that you have quoted have different selector keys. cheers2

Bruce,
No luck on the model number.
I may have been there at some stage..but not there now... See pic below:

According to tractor data it is:
Transmission:
Transmission: Peerless 920
Type: gear transaxle
Gears: 5 forward and 1 reverse

http://www.tractordata.com/lawn-tractors/000/0/9/96-john-deere-stx38-yellow-deck-transmission.html

From the repair manual, the keys look like the 792123A. See piture below.

I am less confident that this is the issue now as:
KEY SPRING HEIGHT
To check shifting keys for loss of spring height, place the short flat portion of a key on a flat surface as shown,
measure the distance from the surface to the key tip. The measurement should be from .400" to .460" (10.2-
11.7 mm); if the measurement is below .400" (10.2 mm) the key should be replaced.

In my case they are above the 10.2...
What else could it be???
