Howdy, I picked up this deck at the local recycling centre for $30. Too good to miss.

It's a 48 inch cut with triple spindles. The left and centre spindles spin clockwise, and the right spins anti clockwise, with centre discharge at the rear. The drive from an engine goes to the left spindle. The belt is a double sided vee belt, (like a hexagon section), so I'd say it's fairly industrial.

The two clockwise spindles are using one side of the belt, and the anticlockwise one uses the other side, so both sides are being used. I've never seen a double sided V belt, though that doesn't mean they are rare. Hope you can get replacements here though, or it would be best not to spend a lot of time finding a use for that deck. Since they only have half as much surface area as a single sided belt, they probably won't last all that long. Note the extreme measures taken in the design to maximise the wrap angles the belt has around the three cutter spindles: this is to try to minimise slip and therefore wear on belt and pulleys.

Hello Greg,

The red colour, the Agricultural look and the way the cutter system is set out sort of indicates to me that it could be off a sixties Wheelhorse or Simplicity tractor. The decks on these units came seperately as an accessory. Most of these decks had a heavy guage cover plate over the pullies, does it look like it used have one but is missing? The reason the pullies were protected was because you drive the tractor over the deck to fit and remove it. Hope this helps.

There is evidence of there once being a cover over the pulley's, but I'd say that the deck hasn't been driven over to fit, as there is no evdience of tyre marks.

My estimation of age would be approximately 10 to 15 years old, and the guage wheels are plastic.

I take some more pics and post them later, I'll also see if I can get info off the belt.

It would almost have to be off something that was fitted with a rear catcher of some sort. Or offered with one.

All the simplicity's ive seen have had side discharge.


I was thinking perhaps its off an westwood but then it would be orange.
Toro's are red, not sure if they did a heavy duty rear discharge.



Would make a great slasher.
With the belt angles set right you could put a 13hp Chonda horizontal shaft motor on it and it would cut just about anything.

Thanks, yeah when I first saw it, I thought of Toro. But I've never seen a Toro with rear discharge, or driven from the side. Yes, I did have a slasher in mind when I bought it, along the lines of my other one, with a vertical shaft engine. I've got an 11 hp B&S here that would do it justice.

Another thought I had was maybe it was off a zero turn of some sort, but the rear discharge still throws me.

Here's a pic of the underside. Each cutting diameter is 17 inch.

And here's the belt. Its a GATES HIPOWER 2 DUBL-V BELT, 88136, MADE IN USA, 9ASS, 50.
The rear side of the belt has the same profile, and it would be in between a B and C section belt in width.

Where the blades/discs missing???




I thought the horizontal shaft was a good idea.
New 13hp chonda $240 and i saw an e start 15hp for $350 which is what they want for most of the 13's with e start.

New vertical shaft 13hp is $500 for a miller falls. Briggs is $850.


An old ride on is worth $100-150 complete less motor. With a motor its worth.............. well top dollar if im selling it, Say $600 or more depends how clean it is.


But then maybe thats why ive got a back shed and half a yard full of crap i trip over. Cant get rid of that, i might need it for blah blah down the track.

hahaha, I find chinese hunks of junk aren't too bad if the maintenance schedule is more regular. I take your point with the hori engine, I've just got a few verts here that's all.

Yeah, it came as is. Checking it out, it would take the disc's of Rover mowers. I'd just have to make a set of reverse blades. I've got some pretty nice spring steel here that would do the trick.

I was contemplating something similar myself, scratch built. twin opposed spindles.


How well are you setup engineering wise??
You cant get a (bar) blade for an 18" MTD star boss, From the mower joint i bought an adpater that came fitted with swinging blades. If you could make something similar you could go with off the shelf Greenfileds blades.
Now i havent checked but thats provided the LH and RH throw are the same size and shape blade. Actually that wouldnt matter.
The idea behind it was that you can buy them easy and they will be longer and a bit more weighty than a push mower blade therefore whatever you make up to mount them on will be smaller and have less reciprocating mass and will not need to be ballanced to an exacting standard to achieve an acceptable result.


Saying that i failed pretty bad last time when i converted a Super600 Victa to run Rover ride on blades. Was a bit vibey.
So id probably go with something thats ready made and ballanced elsewhere. lol.
