Hi Bruce and everyone else
I recently bought a second-hand McCulloch brushcutter (no manual or user guide) and have been trying to find some info - hopefully a user manual.
It "might" be a MAC 250 (remnants of a sticker on the shaft). I found 3 numbers around the place - possibly serial nos, possibly part numbers...on the plastic carby cover, 1260-84110; on the plastic cover over the piston part, 1260-32210; on the metal engine part just where the carby attaches to the engine block, 1280-12110.
The big problem I have at the moment, is that the starting pull cord broke, and I can't get into the casing to change it myself - it's held on by the shaft. Surely (?) there's an easy way/trick to get into it. My local mower bloke is a bit of a ripoff merchant, he wanted to charge me over $70 recently just to clean some crap out of the carby, and it seems silly that I can't perform a standard maintenance function such as changing the ripcord myself. Additionally, the metal guide for the cord is gone and the cord is eating holes in to the plastic casing (causing the cord to wear and break); the mower guy reckons you can't get the guides any more, which seems very dubious to me - anyhow, I want to get the casing off so I can putty up the existing tears and fabricate my own guide - soon as I can get the casing off!!!
Any info you can provide, especially a manual, would be greatly appreciated.
Yours in anticipation
Eric Sunshine Coast, Queensland.

Eric, The casing of the starter would be yellow or green and it sounds like it is a Mac 25. To get the starter apart what you have to do is take the 4 screws out that hold the shaft and cover on then you will see the clutch assembly. If this is the unit I need you to advise me so that I can forward you a parts drawing as I can supply you with a brass eylet that will fit into the plastic. Let me know if this is th machine that you are talking about so I can help you.

Thanx Bruce, you're a legend!!
Yes the casing is indeed yellow. I have removed the 4 screws, and even the whole shaft and clutch assembly, but the shaft base (that the clutch sits on) still holds the casing on...hopefully your parts drawing will show me the final step??!!??
PS Got some tech specs on my beastie? ie size of engine, hp rating, etc
Ta matie
Eric

Eric, Have you taken the clutch off because if you haven't you will not get the starter housing off.

Hiya Bruce
If removing the clutch just involves sliding the assembly off the shaft base (sorry, don't know the correct terminology) then yes I have, but the shaft base is what's holding the casing on.
There has to be another step somewhere that I'm missing...any clues???
Also, I think I need to source a user manual!! - and/or parts list/drawings. Can you help here too?
Eric

Eric, Can you e-mail me and request a parts drawing. Then when you have it I will be able to explain to you better on the way to get to the starter and repair it.
