I have an older LTH130 Husqvarna Ride on (Date of Manufacture:- 4th December 1998) with a Briggs & Stratton 13hp engine (Model Number:- 28R707-1140-E1).

It has an issue of cutting out after about 15 minutes of using it and I'm having trouble working out why.

It seems to be cutting out when it's hot, maybe an overheating issue?

I thought about a fuel issue but the clear fuel filter is always full when it cuts out.

My question is:- is there a thermal cut off on this mower or it's engine that could be causing this issue?

It starts fine after letting it sit for 10 minutes to cool down.

When it's not running I have the fuel tap turned off.

Fresh SAE 30 oil, changed often.

Lever type blade engagement.

I'm hoping someone here can help me work this issue out..

Cheers

Steve

The magneto coil (Magnetron) electronics are known to due to heat soaking. What you are describing is a classic symptom of one that is failing because of this.

Thanks so much for your response here AVB.

Sorry it's taken so long to get back here, I've been a bit sick.

So I pulled the coil off and tested it using my trusty volt meter set to 20k ohms.
With the red probe in the spark plug lead end and the block probe on each side of the coil metal, as well as on the kill plug terminal.

All three locations gave me a reading of 4.75k.

I read online where the readings should be between 2 - 5k ohms and this seemed to be at the top end of those readings.

Is this reading OK or is it too high?

G'day Steve and AVB,

The Coil reading is ok ,you could run the motor and wait until the motor cuts out and then check for spark.

I've had spark plugs and fuel filters that look fine but they fail in 5 to 15 minutes so I would replace them first or
use ones from another mower that you know work well.

What many don't seem to understand is that these CDI and Magnetron coils are not testable by your DIYers. Even many of the repairs shops don't have the necessary testers. The electronics are not testable by your DVMMs.

Here is article that I did on the newer Briggs Magnetron coils.
