Did you ever clarify the year of manufacture of your mower? I have a couple of old vertical crankshaft Briggs: the 1976 one is white, and the 1982 one is black, so they probably changed over in between those two dates. The white one was IMO a much more desirable engine: still Pulsajet, where the black one was Vacujet, and still 3.5 hp/3600 rpm where the black one was less than 3 hp and less than 3000 rpm (Briggs was coy about the exact speed and output). The difference is not just paint colour.
