Hi to All,
As we all love to learn new things and tinker here, here is Lesson No.2;
The word chip has several meanings; the one that we are concerned with here is the earliest known of these, namely 'a small piece of wood, as might be chopped, or chipped, from a larger block'. The phrase 'a chip on one's shoulder' is reported as originating with the nineteenth century U.S. practice of spoiling for a fight by carrying a chip of wood on one's shoulder, daring others to knock it off. This suggested derivation has more than the whiff of folk-etymology about it. Anyone who might be inclined to doubt that origin can take heart from an alternative theory. This relates to working practices in the British Royal Dockyards in the 18th century. In Day and Lunn's The History of Work and Labour Relations in the Royal Dockyards, 1999, the authors report that the standing orders of the [Royal] Navy Board for August 1739 included this ruling:

"Shipwrights to be allowed to bring [chips] on their shoulders near to the dock gates, there to be inspected by officers".

The permission to remove surplus timber for firewood or building material was a substantial perk of the job for the dock workers. A subsequent standing order, in May 1753, ruled that only chips that could be carried under one arm were allowed to be removed. This limited the amount of timber that could be taken and the shipwrights were not best pleased about the revoking of their previous benefit. Three years later, for this and other reasons, they went on strike.
PS. I wonder what they would have thought about the chainsaw!! lol!! chainsaw

Well i`ve finally been able to get back here.I had a Shortcut on my screen & since the Forum changed haven`t been able to get back on as it said Site was under maintenance. For whatever reason i decided to click on one of the icons and voila! So it`s all good now....So this mechanic is busy doing his thing in his garage working on an old motor bike when a cardiologist walks on into his office.The mechanic sees him,straightens up,wipes his greasy hands down his overalls & beckons the cardio over.Hey Doc,how come i strip down these old girls hearts,replace worn valves & such like,get them running like new again,get little pittance & you do much the same & get a fortune? The Doc leans over & whispers in his ear - Try doing that with the motor running!

Hey GgordonN, A warm welcome back to the site, glad that you found us again. yay
If you want to place a shortcut to the forum on ya desktop screen it's easy, just click on "Forums" in the green toolbar above...that'll take you to the main forum page; then click on "File" (under the back arrow, top left of page) scroll down to 'Send' in the drop-down menu, and select 'shortcut to desktop' and voila!! it will magically appear!! wink

PS...To place a gag on the forum , as you have done with "Heartbeat" rather than a reply...click on 'Joke of the Day" in the sub-forum of "Off Topics"; when it opens click on "New topic" type in the title....add a icon (Smily) if you wish, and the gag in the body of the post; easy peasy!! grin
Heartbeat is a ripper by the way!! good1
