Firstly: great site
We have a 5hp quantum that we have neglected badly (left outside overnight, run over rocks ((wife)), lifted down concrete stairs ((wife and i)) etc etc. I've cleared out the carby (info from this site) and have removed cylinder head to clear out the built up gunk around valves etc. mower was blowing black smoke from oil overfill.
I've returned everything back to it's orginal place (governer was removed but i've been advised full clockwise and lock bolt on again.
Mower starts on 1st /2nd pull with ease but has now got excessive tapping sounds whilst running and as of this morning the throttle won't change it's tune. I can hear air being pulled in at different throttle positions but revs dont change.
I have been told it wil be easier to replace the motor($300-$500) ($500 guy was kidding himself - Mower shop in Morayfield - not b&s rep)((they also didnt look/hear the mower)) but we dont have that and i'm not one to walk away from my stuffup and lack of mower respect. Is it all in vain or can the tapping and throttle be fixed by me???

inahammock, 1. Can you check the coil to see if it is touching the flywheel. 2. Also check that flywheel key is not damaged. 3. Check valve clearance and also when you cleaned the valve area did anything drop under the valve seats. 4. Also need model type & code of motor so that we can help with better information regarding noise.

Bruce, I have updated the parts list and manuals area with some information on general settings for governors as I think that he has set it wrong(not clockwise should be counter clockwise).

inahammock, To access the parts list and manuals area you need to press the PayPal donate button at the top of the form and when we are notified you will get access to the area. We you have a lot of information that is being uploaded all the time regarding technical stuff etc. We have just uploaded a workshop manual 1640 pages for peerless transmittions as well.

Thanks Bruce, the coil (armature) is approx. a business card thickness away from magnet and tightened so it wont move.
There seems to be no gap between valves and the stems (looked in springed bottom part of valves behind muffler). No visible gap anyway. I've turned the flywheel around numerous time to watch the cycle and nothing visible.
I'm still to look at flywheel key as i didnt have the tools to lift flywheel.
I've turned the governer shaft back COUNTERCLOCKWISE and locked it on as suggested by your colleague. Still to kick it over as i'll wait for comment on valves.
cheers Rob (inahammock)

Hi Again, Have removed flywheel and key is intact and looks normal. Refitted everything and kicked motor over. Starts easily on 2nd pull and changes revs through throttle as per normal. Tapping or high volume ticking is still there. Valves?? Awaiting your assistance.

Hello Ihammock I have received an email from Moderator asking that I look at your posting. I have done this but I anm sorry I cannot give you and idea as to the source of this noise as the Quantum engine is a bit to modern for me and I have not had any dealings with them.Cheers Joe
