Hi new here. Has anyone any experience in repairing the rover colt gearbox. Its the very basic forward neutral reverse box with hand lever. Mine pops out of forward and can be held in gear but very annoying. I havent pulled it apart yet. Any help would be great.
Welcome to these forums. There is a small ball and spring (15 & 16) that works on a detent in the gear lever. This is sticking or lever (11) is worn out.
I will check to see whether these boxes are serviceable and let you know.
Hope this helps ----------------------- Jack

Thanks heaps Jack. I have the red rover colt 5 and the blue rover colt major. Both have the same gearbox. These gearboxes are an amazing design and for their age and hours of use I have always been impressed with the abuse they can take. The gearbox now bangs out of forward position even when I try to hold it in gear. I have seen part 10 in the second drawing somewhere for sale so it makes me think it might be the problem. Will know for sure when I get it apart.
I like using the major more than the colt because of the foot pedal being the wrong way round on the colt. The colt always catches me out when you release the pedal not thinking it goes to full speed lol. Mowed a few garden beds when not thinking.
Been searching Google for info on repairs to the gearbox but nothing. Probably a good thing, proves how strong they are.
Yes, I've seen that too, although I feel that slipping out of gear could also be the selector fork being worn.
I have been doing a bit of searching on that, but with some interesting results. This is the story so far:-
A site dedicated to Gilson Snowthrowers gave me some hints: They identified the box as a Foote 35 Series. I know these boxes were used on various types of machinery and are a very good design.
The site said, "Foote is now part of DANA and they no longer support these. But here's some good news, a company has bought rights to the Foote 35 design and they are now available here."
The company is Powertow: who make aircraft tugs for small aircraft!
Hey Jack, where did you get the pictures of the parts list from? Im in the process of replacing the chain on the colt 5 and colt major. I know the lengths are different and the colt 5 has an offset link (half link) but are the chain specs different. When I count the links on both chains I am pretty sure the chain specs are different.
I'm surprised that an original design would use a half link in the specification. I was not aware the chains were different either ... so any help for the record from yourself would be welcome.
Jack thanks heaps for the parts list. Both mowers use the same chain. Someone had mucked with the axle adjustment on the colt 5 and added a half link. Amazing how much the chain wears and causes it to get heaps longer. Learnt to count the pins not measure the chain. The colt major is 72 pins long when it is joined. The colt 5 is 78 pins long when it is joined and axle centered on the adjustment slots.
Both chains are common half inch chain. No 41, Pitch 0.500inch 12.70mm Roller dia 7.75mm Roller width 6.35mm Inner plate thickness 1.27mm. Cheap common chain.
A lot of movement forward and back in the sprocket on the axle when the chain is off and on? Will look at it some other time. Guessing key way flogged out the alloy wheel hub maybe.
 hardest forum ever to navigate. Won't let me upload pic's of my 3 wheel mower. Help says use fifth icon from right your other right left and change in markup box that u can't access  give up
Sorry to thread mine, but am at wits end trying to sorch gearbox sprocket for my colt 8. I have downloaded the manual and it shows shaft has a key way and smooth shaft. My 3 speed has a 28 spline shaft and no key way. My mower shop has supplied the keyway sprocket and also a 32 spline sprocket and now has given up. Anyone got info on i tooth 28 spline? Cheers Rob.
