Hi all,

Having trouble starting 038 magnum. Spark, spark plug and compression is good. When it is choked to start after several pulls with no fire it has flooded to the point of petrol coming out the muffler.

I would think that either the needle/jet or it's adjustment or one of the gaskets in the carby must be the problem. However local Stihl dealer wanted $60+ for a gasket only kit.

Does anyone make aftermarket carby kits for the Bing 48A101C carby that stihl uses in this model?

Uncle Grumpy,

1. Did you remove the muffler and check for scoring on the piston?

2. How old is the fuel(time of purchase from garage)?

3. Did you check for spark?

Gasket kit for carby is only worth $25 to $30 dollars. cheers2

Bruce,

1. The piston appears to be in very good order (no scores) as does the other side of the cylinder you can see thru muffler. The muffler is very clean with all passages open.

2. The fuel would be approx three weeks old and I mix it with Husqvarna 2 stoke oil at 25:1

3. There is a good spark when tested outside of cylinder. Although the plug becomes dripping wet when flooded.

Uncle Grumpy,

You will need to replace the diaphrams as well as the needle and fuel filter in the carby. yay

These kits are about $35.00. woot

All I need is the information on the carby i.e walbro, Zama etc plus numbers that are stamped in the carby. cheers2

Uncle Grumpy,

The 038 series is normally fitted with a TILLOTSON type carby. I have not come across the Bing type but I will check around next week. cheers2

yay yay yay yay yay yay yay

The answer eluded me for some time, however perseverance paid off!

The Spring that holds the choke flap away from the carby when turned off was stretched and weak. This meant that each time the vacuum from the carby got too high the choke flap would shut against the carby causing it to flood and stall the motor.
