is this just a case of adjusting the cutter belt ?

Hi Jason, I suggest you begin by going through the belt adjustment procedure:

If that doesn't help we can discuss a possible malfunction, but we need to be sure of the adjustment first.

Thanks for reporting back, Jason. In Item 6, you should have adjusted the cutter clutch so that it is clear and free when the lever is in the disengaged position. In Item 7, you should have adjusted the cutter brake and verified that it works. So, it sounds as if something went wrong when going through the Item 6 and/or Item 7 adjustment, or some part of the spindle mechanism is seized. Was the cutter clutch free in the disengaged position after you made the Item 6 adjustment? Note that it is normal for the clutch not to free properly after a few years' use, and that is why you then have to perform the Item 6 adjustment. You make the adjustment by screwing the adjuster until the clutch has a decent amount of clearance.

At the moment it sounds as if you may have made some mistake in carrying out the adjustment. Please post some pictures of the disengagement adjuster system, and let's talk about how you performed the adjustment. Then we can see whether we can work out what has gone wrong.

According to Item 6, the disengagement handle is in the engaged position when it is parallel to the foot rest. That sounds like the forward postion to me.

To identify the adjuster we need to know which model of Compact Tractor you have, from this list of differences:

When you answer that question, please include the pictures of the mechanism as requested previously.

Here are the parts, and the list of part names, numbers and model application:

You can use any part where no model number is given, but when a model number is given, you can only use the parts for 09F3. That means your adjuster is Item 19 in the diagram, part number AM010**

We will still need pictures of your disengagement linkage and cutter clutch to resolve your problem.

I don't have a Cox tractor, so I have to work from the parts list. A common way to engage and disengage cutters on ride-on mowers is to have a pivoted idler pulley running on the cutter belt. When you put the lever in the engaged position (forward) the linkage pulls the idler against the belt, tightening the belt so the cutter runs. When you pull the lever back, the idler is pulled away from the belt, leaving it slack so the cutter does not run. I suggest you disconnect the engine's spark plug, then have a look at the cutter belt while you move the cutter disengagement lever back and forward.

(Never look under the tractor without disconnecting the spark plug.)
