Got this at the tip shop for $10.
No one wanted it because it was seized.
When I got it home & started to strip it, a small twig fell out of the flywheel. This is what was making it appear to be seized.
It is a powerhouse, 4 blades with a 20inch cutting path, if I mow in CCW circles it mulches all the clippings leaving very little.
I had to mount the tank, source the blade plate & fit the rear shute instead of a catcher (not sure what the shute is off?)
Must be a special catcher to go around the gear box, Ive never seen one.

I want, I want.

505 SP

Been looking for one of those for ages. Got a few push ones but no SP.

The tank is meant to sit on a metal shelf that bolts to the back wall of the mower behind the carb in the two holes there. Tank is held in place by two springs in plastic tubes through holes in the tank.

Not sure how well the tank you have there will last given that its held from either end and needs to be held firm. With the handle latches and all that.

You could find an engine cover and tank from a late model Victa, they used the straight inlet manifold so it will mount up on the motor and clear the carb.

Both SP and push 505's use the same catcher.
Its the same large twin grip catcher as the 80's high arch/Vortex/Mustang used but it has a notch in the front edge to go around where the gearbox is.

Keep an eye out, i got a NOS one from the mower shop up the road.
You could modify a regular catcher to work.

If i think if it i will grab a pic for ya.

Thanks Bob,
Yes, this thing runs very well.
The SP is adjusted like you are still pushing it, but not.
Which is great.
Other SP mowers Ive used seem to drag you along.
I have had a go at cutting a catcher. (didnt really work or maybe I was rough).
I did remove the tank shelf as my chances of getting that style is slim.
I will check the tank I have for its security.
Yes Ok I know the late model Victa tank you mean, will keep my eyes peeled.
You have great knowledge on all the models.

Bob,
I bought this yesterday & have never seen the metal cover on the engine before.
Must be an example of the early Victa you mentioned.

That one is a Vortex.
The cover over the muffler is to stop the cover melting.

FYI, dont leave a power torque out in the weather with the starter pulley exposed like that. The starter housing will fill up with water and the water can find its way down past the center O-ring into the engine.

Stand it up on its nose and lean it against a wall or other mowers or something.

Im still working on the pictues. Meaning to get out in the shed later on. Hasnt happend yet. Probably wont either, damn bathurst.

Ok will keep the Vortex out of the weather.

Is it true, that for a Vortex you should set the carby poppet valve to postion "A"?
Something to do with it having a larger blade disc.

They are OK in the weather with the dress cowl on top, its just enough to stop the rain.

Yeah something like that with the poppet. Im pretty sure the carb has different springs and stuff as well. The RPM on a Vortex is lower than a regular Victa. They are a lot quieter too.
The series 1 had a larger disc, but it had shorter blades. It had like big louvres in it, its meant to act like a fan to help move the clippings. The later ones had an oval plate but with a low lip, that takes regular blades, it had like a rubber fan on the top of it. It was called the 'turbo disc'

Victas do not need to rev hard anyway. Being a two stroke they make more torque.

I took some pics for ya.

Tank. Second shot is the springs that hold it. You said you had the shelf. Unfortunately unlike the other tanks, ive only ever seen this one on the 505 base.

Either one of these two will let you keep the straight inlet.
You also need the black cowl that goes under the cover, its taller.

And heres the catcher.

Try a heat gun. If you use a bit of care you can warm the plastic and stretch it. Do it a bit at a time and walk away and let it cool. You can end up with a molten mess quick smart. A soldering iron and some slivers of catcher plastic, I cut them with tin snips. With patience you can do wonders.
The std alloy base catchers are not too hard to find.

Great,
Details I will look out for:
The oval plate with a low lip.
'turbo disc'

I have seen that tank before, yep I have the shelf not those springs though.

The catcher is cool, I cant believe you have one.
I have repaired catchers with a soldering iron before, so I know what you mean there. Havnt used a heat gun yet, but makes sense.
