Hi I recently bought an old lawn mower which the guy showed me working.. I brought it home pulled the cord and it snapped [Linked Image] I took the pull cord chassis apart and battled with the coiled spring to thread the cord back through, after fitting the cord chassis back on it works fine but wont start [Linked Image] Im not sure if there is a petrol valve somewhere or a pump? The lawnmower is 4 stroke, has Brigss n Stratton engine, number 11 on front of mower in cast iron metal and Masport on the grass collector. On top of the engine it has nob that reads, off start and run. I obviously turn it to start, I can smell petrol but pulling on the cord doesnt want to start it... any ideas???

HI liamh,
Perhaps you have flooded carbey with start setting.
Try using 'run' setting to start. Also check to make sure ignition is not shorted out with 'stop'switch. I presume you have checked petrol amount in tank!!

First step whenever i get a new mower (new to me, generally as old as the hills), take the spark plug out, put it back in the lead and rest it so the body of the spark-plug is against the cylinder head then pull the starter. should be able to see a sparking in the plug. this will confirm wether its electrical or carby problem.
