I have an old Victa VC Sports Series 70 Mark 3 160cc two-stroke. I've just rebuilt the top of the engine with new rings, gaskets, spark plug and gave it a good clean inside and out. But I'm still having the same problem as before I did the work on it. It will start, but runs slow and rough, and eventually stalls. No matter what position the throttle is at, it runs the same. Spark seems good, the carby has been cleaned and appears to function properly, and compression is very good, much better than it was. I'm a bit at a loss as to what else could be wrong with it? Any Ideas?

damiane, 1. Did you replace the condenser and points? 2. Does the carby have a gov/vane ( plastic flag)? 3. Did you replace the oil seals? Please answer these questions so that I might be able to help you.

1. No, haven't touched the ingintion system.
2. The carby has a black vane (It's a G3 carby).
3. By oil seals do you mean the piston rings? Then yes I replaced them, otherwise no didn't spot any other seals on the engine when it was apart. Are there more seals inside the crank case? I didn't pull that apart.
Another thing I forgot to mention is that it was blowing a lot of smoke before I worked on it. Which made me suspect the rings were buggered. It doesn't seem to blow any smoke now, or at least only a minimal amount. Don't know whether this is relevant or not?
Thanks.

You will go to spare parts and manuals area this forum for information 3. By oil seals do you mean the piston rings? You have two oil seal one on the point side and one on the blade plate side(this one could be your problem) :Wavey:

Ok, I'll try new oil seals, points and condensor.
Yes, I had the piston off, needed a clean to get the new rings onto it and into the cylinder.
How do I get at the oil seals? Obviously I need to remove the engine from the deck, and take the fan off the top. But where to from there? (Sorry, I haven't had that part of the engine apart so I've no idea how it goes together under the fan).
What sort of prices can I expect for the parts I need?
thanks for your help!

damiane, Before we go to far with seals etc I want to know which side you put the ring gap to when you put the cylinder back. The inlet or exhaust port side. As to the seals you will be able to get them from CBC bearings and would cost about $8-00 each. Try this first before we go any further.

I put the piston back on the same way it came off, not too sure which side the ring gaps were. There were notches in the slots for the rings so they could only be put in one position.
Will try and at least get the flywheel and the igintion assembly off tomorrow night. I'll try what you say to check the condition of the top seal.
What's the best way to get the flywheel off, I've tried but can't stop the engine from spinning when I try to undo the nut on top?
Thanks.

damiane,
If you took the piston off it can be put back on two way the incorrect way and the correct way. Which way do the notches point to then exhaust side or inlet side?
To remove the flywheel off put a socket on the nut and hold the blade plate then hit the extension with a hammer to release the nut.
Otherwise take the engine off the frame and put the sleve for the blade plate in the vice and then undo the flywheel nut.

Bruce,
Sorry I've taken so long to reply, I got caught up in other jobs.
I've tried putting fuel into the gap between the crankshaft and casing. It dissappeared within a few seconds. Does this mean the oil seals are stuffed?
I also re-timed it as per Victa's specs, but to no avail.
The ring gaps are on the intake side of the engine.
Thanks,
Damian.

damiane, You need to replace the top seal if it is leaking and I would also be replacing the bottom as well. We have information on the motor in the parts list and manuals area that will give you all the spec's. Let us know if you have the machine running yet.
