Good evening all,

Sorry not sure if this is the right place to post this! Please advise if it needs to be moved.

I’ve done a bit of reading on sharpening SB reels and bed knives, but I can’t seem to find anything guidelines on if a reel has enough ‘meat’ left on the bone to be sharpened. How can I identify if it is worth sharpening or not?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Hammy39

Hi Hammy39

Could you send through a photo?

Its all to do with how much blade metal is left between the 'spiders' which the blades are welded to

Hi Tyler,

Thanks for coming back to me, I’ve uploaded a phot of the reel.

From that photo, plenty of meat left, maybe 50-60% worn

if the whole reel is like that it has many more light grinds left in it. basically its stuffed when you are nearly down to the round spiders that join the blades.

Other factors that need to be taken into account is if some welds are higher (if it hit something and was re welded), if there are rock nicks in the blades, you have to spin grind all blades back past the lowest problem. do that a few times and you dramatically shorten life
