I started out with one mower and later got another, then some more came along and lately people who think I'm a mower lover keep giving me their old mowers. I thought I had learned to say no but it's a hard thing to do........ https://www.tinyurl.com/pb7hj/Mowers/MowersAndMods.html

They tend to grow on us, literally! Word is around that I am into old mowers but I have yet to be given one. Every old mower I have in my collection were purchased, often at considerable expense. Of course if ever I try to sell one, nobody wants it for the price I am asking. Actually I lie, as I did sell a 1970s Rover a few years back for about $50. It actually cost me more than that to repair. I still await the day when someone might be so kind as to give me an old mower.

Hi MowingManiac, Lot of dodgie stuff going on there but if it does the job for you so be it. I know you have picked all these mowers up for nothing but long ago I would have hunted up a Victa 24 to do that sort of work and you would not be cobbling up all weird bits and pieces so you can cut that area. The area I saw they will do it so easily and quickly you wouldn't bother with all the wrecks you have picked up.

Hi NormK, vint_mow and MowingManiac, the ones that stood out were the rubber car mat over the rust hole and the Powertorque Silver Streak. Hope you get the latter going and source a catcher, as they're a real workhorse on long grass and leave a clean cut behind.
Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

And another option I would have looked at if I had that area to mow would have been to bolt 2 18 inch mowers together so you can get a 35 inch cut. Bit of work setting it up but would soon make up the time it took to build it. And then there is the further option of building this twin mower using an Ariens self propelled drive and that would be an amazing machine. And then you could also use a complete Ariens swivel front wheel one with a pair of 16 inch mowers bolted to the front on each side and you could end up with a 50 inch cut. Now that would be an awesome machine. I must stop thinking of ideas like this.

Glad to have provided some food for thought Norm, but I'll leave the clever engineering projects for you. I'll just continue saving abandoned mowers from going directly to landfill by simple means like removing tiny bits of crud from main jets and replacing tired spring systems with pieces of string.
Going for a wider cut wouldn't work on that large area in the second photo. It is a lot steeper in parts than it looks and consists mainly of dips and mounds over a sandstone base. I've already ground down the highest points with mowers that ended up in scrap metal bins
Under the trees are a myriad of gnarly roots - those spots are tackled by brushcutter only.
And if you consider my mower mods dodgy, well, for medico-legal reasons there's no photos of what I do at the business end of my brushcutters, suffice to say the first things to go are the guards and any safety features.

Many professionals remove the guards and put up YouTube videos using them that way on suburban properties.
I suspect those specialist tools are to discourage you servicing your own machine and getting you take it to a service centre where it's worth buying those tools with unique ends. I had an affable chap the other day do a tune up on my blower vac free of charge using those tools even though warranty didn't cover that. Warranty has now expired.
