Hi all Found this in the kerb recently.. it was missing the starter and looked like it had been left out in the weather for some time. I was mainly interested in the tank and spares for my V40. The remains of the sticker on the cowl looked like Hercules 400 ?... I cannot find a reference to this model...year anyone ?
BTW.. put a Sanli starter on it , cleaned out the carb and away it went.. no smoke !
Hi guys.. looks like I spoke too soon ..although it starts and revs well, It only does it for a few minutes !.. It acts like it is starving for fuel.. If it sits for a minute or so, then it will start straight away.. Carby has been thoroughly cleaned, several times now, new hoses and flush out of the tank, but the problem persists.. any ideas ?
Have you tried to remove the main jet nozzles and clean the tiny holes and clean the pilot jet? Check also the fuel filter if not block and mainly the tank fuel cap air vent might be blocked to cause vacuum. Try to run the engine with fuel tank cap open or loose to allow more fuel to flow.
I usually run the motor with the air filter off then when the motor is running and it starts to die I give it a spray of start ya bastard ,if the motor revs up with the starter fluid then I know it's a fuel supply problem but if the motor still cuts out with starter fluid then I know it's a spark problem ,try a new spark plug and if that doesn't work replace the coil.
I've had a lot of these that needed new coils ,classic coil problem is to get hot then break down.
It may not be the carburetor, if it starts and runs, than starts again after a few minutes it may be something to do with the engine heating up. I am not aware of the model but with older engines a faulty condensor could cause those symptoms, i have never experienced it with an electronic ignition. A fuel line too close to the engine heating up and vaporizing the fuel is another possibility but it would not normally restart until it cooled for 15 to 30 minutes. Air flow pushing the kill switch lead onto something, partially blocked crank case breather if it has one. I can see your going to get your money's worth out of this one.
If I can get a large enough hammer it will run for awhile just trying to get away from me
Ok, now I have a bit of time Kenny, I checked a paper owners manual for the V40. It actually states bpr5es. Hercules I am not sure, but they are an identical motor - if you look up the hercules motor the v40 photos actually come up as well.
I have a 6es in my v40 and haven't observed any problems
Part of the problem arises when many of these manufacturers use torch spark plugs - whose heat range never perfectly lines up.
Sanli 118cc version of this motor comes with a FR6TC
If you look up FR6TC, it will say it interchanges with bosch WR7DC, which is a bpr6es (common for many cars as well - Camira use 6es and pretty sure valiant among others did as well). But then they also say BPR5ES
Honda had the courtesy of using the same plug in many things BPR6ES was in the old civics, and quite possibly some of their motor bikes.
Provided they have the protruded tip plug (P in NGK), I wouldn't worry about 1 heat range.
What I would be worry about is making sure the rpm isn't above 3100 - they like throwing rods
