Lucky speedy, on the way home this morning. A Pope
It has an engine stop on it and the brake was engaging with the flywheel. That's how it stops pretty quick. But the top lever connections andthrottle connection were missing so that is what brought it undone for the owner......
I'll disconnect the brake thing.
Good compression, bearings.. spark, cleaned up flywheel, brew air everywhere.
Just want to start it with the electric drill and I'll put it on my Victa Ultralite base...
cheers speedy

Hi speedy,

well done. Keep us updated.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

I had to see if motor ran.... it did.
So I took it off and put it on the Victa Ultralite base...... took fuel tank carb apart to clean, cleaned flywheel, drained oil, but problem was the base plate..... I didn't take boss off old B&S motor. Victa base plate wouldn't fit.... so I cut ends off straight Pope cutter blade and sharpened. It fitted together ok, only 10mm short of skirt of mower base. This is a problem....
I could bend the flat blade to make it 10 mm lower, or cut a bigger hole on the Victa base plate so it fitted the Pope boss. If I do that , blade replacement will be easy , with Victa blades. I just have to check blade to base skirt distance......
I mowed a few square mtrs today short ,but I could feel the base rubbing, no good.
But the engine ran perfectly, I got the springs adjusted, and throttle cable , new oil. Quiet running,
Easy to start, just got to hook up a kill switch. With the yankie deadman switch that was fitted, there was no throttle killswitch ,like normal B&S motors, maybe I can fit one..
I'm getting there.....
cheers speedy

Speedy, if you are having problems getting the blade bosses off, just park the mower over a icecream container full of old oil and drop the height all the way down.

Leave it sit for a fortnight and most of the time it will come off easy.

Just don't go to move the mower in the mean time or you will end up with a massive mess

Hi Speedy, Tyler,

is that Victa base 18"? It looks it in the picture. I would try and swap bosses if it looks to be viable. Disc with swing blades are better and it will be original spec again.

I don't know how you fiddle with those springs. I had a lot of trouble attempting to swap a governor spring on my B&S last time. They are fiddly to remove.

I heated up Victa baseplate to belt it flat, also bent the straigh blade...
I have to cut 32mm hole in plate to fit old boss... Looks like it's working. It's a bit fiddly.. making things work.

Too much vibration , severe wobble.... had to ditch baseplate and put straight blade back on.....
Mowed a lawn, good. It's for a lady so being smaller was lighter and easier to use.
Only problem , if it ever needs a new blade, but leave that till later.
cheers
