Hi All
I'm a newbie to this forum so please be gentle on me. I have a Rover 45 lawnmower Model 845058 with a briggs & stratton motor 91202-0123. My mower keeps on surging and runs for about 2 - 3 minutes before cutting out. The only way I can be the mower running is with the choke partially closed. Will the problem be fixed by cleaning the carby. My problem is I'm not sure on how to remove the carby. Any help would be appreciated

Hello Roypod

Welcome to the forum

Definitely sounds like carby, however, please check first the 2 intake bolts are tight where the carby mounts to the engine

Have seen many with the carby basically falling off - causing a lean condition through air leaks.

If you put the choke full on and it floods and stalls - you need to rebuild the carby (or else its a minor air leak). If you put the choke on full and it revs hard and won't die out, it is an air leak (usually severe by that point).

Have seen many carby bolts loosen and fall out. The next progression of the lost bolt finding the reel is unpleasant for everyone

Thanks Tyler. The bolts are tight. With the choke full on the engine surges a lot but doesn't stall. I'm guessing the carby needs cleaning. To get the carby off I'm assuming I need to take the fuel tank off first. The mower will go but only with the choke partially closed - does this cause any damage to the engine

Can't remember what I said in the message that obviously went off into cyberspace, but there is some harm that can come from running the choke half on; namely if you have it on too much you will wash the oil off the bore and dilute the oil.

From there, the oil thins out as well as acidifies which pits the bearings long term... but anyway.

Effectively, you undo the carby 2 bolts, plus another one down the side of the tank. The tank and carby come off as one unit.

Then you take the side panel off, put in a new diaphragm, and take the carby off the tank and clean the bowl.

First step, get the tank and carby off
Regards
