Im picking this Vulcan up next week. I don't know anything about these and any input would be greatly appreciated! I only have the 1 picture and that's all until I pick it up.
Hi Sean It appears that for a short period in the early 1970s, Australia's Vulcan Industries were making and selling Masports in Australia. [see article below].
This would come to an end with Masport Australia setting up shop here in the mid-1970s.
In the late 1970s, Vulcan would sell Vulcan Supa-Swifts.
G'day Sean That was a nice gesture from Masport, and sincere thanks to you for sharing it at ODK.
I have often said that if Victa dominated the 2-stroke market here with their Victa engines, NZ power rotary mower production was dominated by many makers in NZ using the Ironhorse 2-stroke.
Masport was NZ's equivalent to AUS's Victa. Both were the No. 1 in their respective countries.
The key difference between the Victa and Ironhorse was in their basic designs - Ironhorse motors had a reed valve that injected fuel directly into the crankcase; Victa used the piston as a valve to inject fuel into the crankcase.
I guess the Ironhorse was the more efficient (and refined) of the two; but the Victa was a more robust design for our conditions. [I hope that's not too controversial].
The Ironhorse had a mechanical governor; the Victa engine had a pneumatic system (when Victa finally used a governor!!!).
