A mate gave me a GMC generator a couple of days ago and the problem was quickly obvious, somebody had been fiddling with the carby. Tell tale was the end of the governor arm and spring had been bent so the carby could be removed. It fired up and ran well, probably a bit rich which was obvious by the smoke, but it was generating well and ran my drill on high speed no problems. The issue is the float needle not sealing. It is a steel tip and it looks like a brass seat in the carb. I would expect it to have a viton seat and I'm not sure if this has been removed. I have tried a couple of viton tipped needles but it still won't seal. I doubt it is worth hunting a carb for it so it will probably end up going to the scrap unless somebody has any suggestions. Being GMC it is probably not worth wasting any more time on it.
I think GMC might be a little underrated. I have a few of there items and the have always given good service but most of them have been dumped now.
I guess nobody will be willing to pay a decent price for that generator but if you needed one for your own use. I think they were about 850 W so quite useful
Yes Jeff they are a 2 stroke pity it runs well and easy to start. I have ratted a number of carbs here and tried several viton tipped one but no joy so far
Haven't dealt with 4 stroke GMC like your one, but my 2 stroke 850w has a viton tip needle
Being a fairly generic OHV chonda you would think the needles would be similar
I have also got decent mileage out of GMC - as has a friend with a GMC half crank trimmer (weedeater featherlite engine) who has used it 15 years now and it only got its first service in 2018 (along with an ignition coil and starter repair shortly after (ie - would have been uneconomical to repair)
Hi Tyler, you are right, it was only when Max was here and we were looking at it and I saw the 4 stroke on the pullstart, shows how closely I looked at it. I have had a couple of them here before and they were 2 strokes so I just assumed the same. Now maybe it is worth trying to fix the float needle problem.
Hi Tyler, I certainly wouldn't pay $30 for a carby for one, just not worth it, I will give Maxs idea a go still think it either needs a viton seat or a viton tipped needle
