I'd flip it over for a closer look mate, the cable ties present in the pics (as Norm has mentioned) may be a clue to why your tearing up the green stuff.

I attached some underside pics from the front axle... looks sort of ok to me... I might have to go detective mode and try find some reference material on how it looks and how it should operate.
