The asbestos facing was something I'd considered too when I did the job. I also though about the physical size of the thing compared to the wheel clutches.

I figured that the clutch would be engaged once after start and stay engaged with very little slippage after that (???) and that in my case the machine is basically in retirement and will never be slashing acreage again. Also, I figured for the cost of a bit of cork the experiment was worth doing - and I really didn't know what else to try.

I didn't even think of sending it to specialist organisation and I guess even if I had I'd probably have decided against it based on cost and the fact the machine is just a retired curiosity piece - and I'm well up for the cork experiment! smile
