Hi QSR, I would recommend following Jaffa's advice with the carby before worrying about the piston and rings.
Getting a stubborn 2 stroke to run is about following a series of suggestions (ie. the diagnosis) before moving on to the next parameter...chances are that the prob is carby related, and, with Jaffa's advice, may well fix the problem.
