G'day everyone,

Yes it's a bit crazy but has anyone tried to make a new modern Victa 2 stroke look like a classic? Yes it may look tacky but it might also be great.

It would definitely stand out in the street when mowing like the classic green deck Victa's did with the orange coloured wheel caps from the past.

I was just thinking how sometimes car companies bring back models and livery from the past on new models, why can't it be done with a Victa lawnmower? lol

They still seem to list a new Victa Commando on the Victa website, now if that looked like my original one I might actually buy a new Victa 2 stroke! lol

Is anyone out there good at using those photo shop programs? Can you modify a picture of a new Victa 2 stroke mower to look like a classic? It would be interesting to see how it looks like in classic livery.

I think in the end the only way is to just customise a new mower yourself. I'd certainly give it a shot but a new mower is quite costly. I would try and make a new one look like my original Victa Commando in my avatar. Paint the deck the same green. Orange coloured wheel caps, black top cowl, black handles. And even a black catcher with maybe the Victa logo on the sides.

What do you guys think?

Cheers!

G-day Converse,
I have toyed with the idea of painting up a powertorque mower from the 80s to look like the disco purple VC Sports from 1974 with purple deck, catcher, wheel caps and sky blue engine cover. I get the feeling it would only make me yearn for the real thing more lol.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

G'day everyone,

Hi Mowerfreak I don't think i've ever seen a disco purple VC sports mower before. Must be pretty rare?

Nice photo's there Gizmo, the newer model on the right with the flames looks pretty awesome. That would really stand out in the street while mowing that's for sure!

Cheers!

G-day Gizmo,
those pics with the flames really stand out. They look great. Shows what you can do to bring extra personality to your garden equipment!

G-day Converse,
video time. Here is a nice running example for you. I've seen one or two in my time. They also came in red with white top as well as a slightly later green with white top version.

Gizmo, you are in front with what looks to be a good purple catcher.
If you can't source a set of original purple wheel caps, you can get a very good matching paint at Bunnings. The colour is called grape and comes in a spray can from Rustoleum in their x2 range.

G'day Mowerfreak and Gizmo,

Cool I have never seen those before, it just speaks groovy seventies, disco, Austin Powers, etc...LOL!

That's in pretty good condition there Gizmo, a good clean up and it will look great. Good thing about those alloy style decks, they don't rust out like the steel decks. I have an old VC160 which I took out for some photo's a few months ago. And the deck is in exactly the same condition as I put it away 10 years ago.

Cheers!

Evening Gizmo, Mowerfreak, Converse and ODK members,

Here is my orange VC Sports, engine has been rebuilt with bearings, rings/piston, seals etc. Not easy to find now, my base is scraped and worn on one side but sound. Wheels are all original with rears having no SP internals.

It makes a nice deep bellow, just as I remember the similar looking all green VC 125 mk III. I had the "psychedelic red" just like yours but it had a large chunk of the base missing on the right side and no catcher.
Apart from the worn edge, that's in remarkable condition.

Nice one there Paul_c,

Just wondering as i've noticed the snorkels on these look like the snorkels on the VC160 mower, what can you use as a replacement snorkel? Have any of you guys repaired a broken and missing rubber snorkel on these?

My VC160 is missing all the bottom bend in the rubber snorkel near the carby. You can't buy these snorkels new and I don't think you can even get them aftermarket? I was thinking one day of just going into Super Cheap Auto and checking out the radiator hoses they have on the shelf and just find one with a similar diameter and bend in it and just cut and join it in.

Cheers!

For snorkels, I keep a few vacuum cleaner hoses, and use them. They bend pretty well...
Use a utilux clip.
cheers

G'day Speedy,

Yes I guess I could use something like that, but i'd just replace the whole lot from the air filter housing to the carby. I was hoping that maybe you could get some of these things aftermarket. I guess I was only going to patch the bottom to try and keep the rest looking original.

I wonder if any reproduction companies like Rare Spares are interested in making some aftermarket parts for Victa mowers. Although I doubt there will be enough demand for them to bother.

Who knows one day they could even press out some new Victa decks. But that's only if they get the green light from Briggs and Stratton who own the rights to anything Victa.

Rare Spares now make so many replacement panels and parts for older Ford, Holden and Chrysler vehicles, maybe someone should ask them if they are thinking about making bits for the good old aussie Victa 2 stroke lawnmower..lol wink

Converse if you are talking about the snorkel to suit the G3 carby I usually either bin them or give them to somebody who wants the old G3 carbs. I don't bother with them I just fit G4's/LM's on all of them. I will be a bit more careful of them in the future if this is the case. Not sure what is here at the moment

Hi NormK yes I guess they are quite rare to find now and because of their age the rubber is getting old and cracking everywhere. I am not too fussed as I don't use the VC160 for everyday mowing. See the later G4/LM type snorkels will be around for a long time as they are still selling the 2 strokes now with pretty much the same style vacuum hose type snorkel.

But the early G3 carby mowers with that long rubber snorkel hose are getting hard to find now.

Cheers!

I found a G3 equipped VC Mustang and it had the ribbed snorkel of the G4 installed in place. It worked alright.

G'day and thanks for the help everyone, I might actually patch it up or just change the whole lot to the vacuum style hose and give it a run one day out the front on the nature strip. I can just imagine the looks on people walking past thinking gees what the hell is that! It looks even older than the usual green dinosaur that bloke always uses! LOL! Maybe I just will try a bit of cut and mulch as the grass isn't that tall now and not use the catcher as it's in really good condition on the front lip and I don't want to crack and break the plastic away. That's one of the reasons I never use this as a regular mower. Very hard to find catchers for them unlike the later steel deck black catchers there is heaps around and there is also patch repair sections for the black catchers also.

Cheers!

The steely is a use and abuse mower, the VC-160 is a take it out for an occasional exercise classic.
