Hi all - new mower collector and first timer here on the forum - wanting to ask about any info that can help me on the latest mower that came home with me :-)
Found it at the tip recycle centre for $15, missing a fuel cap, impulse starter, and the rear right wheel is torched from the exhaust. Quick clean of the plug, freed up the throttle cable and fuel tap, fresh fuel, then a wash, bit of aero start and runs like a dream! I think its a J64? Has a VK-30 4 stroke, chartreuse green in colour.... 60s but what year specifically? Have found some info from the forum but doesn't seem a common mower - Are these rare? Keen to hear from someone who can enlighten me please. - cheers all!
Hello vk-30 Many thanks for sharing those wonderful record images.
Yep, I guess that is 'Chartreuse Green' there. I note that '4' is cast in the base and the machine has a 'wash port' for cleaning the base.
I note the J64 in Turner material has a different fuel tank. It may be this is a J63 ...?
These are rare ... in the sense Turner has been ignored in lawnmower collecting circles. It's only in recent years that Turner is getting recognition. Needless-to-say, 'rare' does not mean 'valuable'.
I have written a lot - but not enough yet about Turner.
I'd suggest that this might be an early J64, factory fitted with a 'runout stock' J62 engine, as it's colour-matched. That would make it of 1964 vintage, I'd say.
The '4' cast into the base is a J64 characteristic, going by those pics, and would denote 4-stroke.

Sorry Gadge, I'm not so convinced... That often-quoted chart has devil in the lack of detail. Note the lack of 1963 models ...?
Turner certainly made mowers in 1963 - but without significant change - best guess. This could very well be a 1963 job. - a '62 model with cosmetic changes.
This is a 19" deluxe machine but with the older standard VK fuel tank. I am thinking older not later. Certainly not 1964. My best guess ... 1963.
"Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence", after all. Particularly as there's a dearth of original Turner promotional and technical literature, these days.
