Hi can some one please advise, i have removed my reel and on close inspection have noticed one of the blades has been bent. Photos attached.

Is this repairable or is it time for a new reel?

Thanks

Hi JAP,

No issues with that reel at all. An experienced person would have that back in shape within a couple of minutes. I gather you are going to get the reel ground and if so I would get the person doing that job to do it for you. Lets hope he doesn't charge you for it though as it's part n parcel of doing the reel grind as its nothing serious. Now if it was a broken blade I would expect a charge for that work.

BTW you've got plenty of material on that reel for a few more reel grinds in the future.

Cheers,
BB.

Thanks BB, will take it in to get it ground tomorrow. another question

I have seen the post on electrolysis to clean the reel. I am going to give that a go and paint the reel, am I best to paint and clean before sharpening or after?

also any advice or links to removing back roller?

Thanks.

Hi JAP,

I've just started using an electrolysis bath a few weeks ago with tremendous success. The only negative is it takes 24 hours for each lot of parts you hanging the bath depending on the bath size. I had to do the chassis end for end, thus it took around 48 hours to do it ensuring that the chassis didn't touch the two large flat bar anodes I had sitting on each side.

Check out the following link, it's more about installation but removal is rather simple. The clutch assembly should be removed initially and then it's merely the removal of the drive gear and then undoing the 6 nut and bolts which hold the carriers to the side of the chassis.

Let us know how you go.

Cheers,
BB.

As far as the reel is concerned it should be thoroughly cleaned and then etch primed, then after that paint it with a good quality gloss colour paint of your choice.

Only after this fit new bearings onto the two shaft ends not forgetting the domed washer /spacers, making sure that they have the dome facing towards the reel.

Also when putting the bearing back onto the shaft make sure you only put force on the inner race and not the outer, making sure that the bearing fits snugly and isn't loose on the shaft. If they are loose then the shaft requires to be centre punched evenly around the bearing location area to stop the bearing spinning on itself.

Cheers,
BB.
