I just got given a Tecumseh motor off a Victa Concept.
Ther guy didn't know if itruns or not. It has low comptession , good spark, and was missing a valve cover bolt, that's why it's dirty i guess.

I wanted to bench test it before I cut up and old Victa 160 high arch to fit it as I don't have another base.
Just wondering if I need a load on the engine, like a blade disk...i would somehow bolt it to some wood.

Most of them need a blade carrier fitted so they don't kick back. I think you will find problems with the carby just looking at it

The carbies are about $20 on eBay, one I bought came from the Philippines. If you need a base let me know Speedy, I've got a huge assortment of Rover's and Victa's to choose from and can bring it to Bundy next time I'm over.

I have a few of those Tecumesh motors here but I haven't bothered spending the $20 odd on a carby just to see if they will run. Not much point in spending $20 on a motor that might be worth zip

You do know a good ultrasonic cleaning, a float valve seat, bowl gasket, and a couple o-rings is about all you ever need to do these; unless, the primer bulb is bad. And for test purposes only the float valve seat and the two o-rings on the nozzle after cleaning is all you need to test.

As for compression these engine has a built-in decompression system so your compression will be around 65-70 on good engine. Checking when lower will usually show up an out of spec condition. If it not this then an leak-down test is order to do a non-invasive cylinder condition test.

BTW the ultrasonic cleaner I have has been one the best investment I ever made; even though, I have up sized a couple times due working with larger carburetors. I even clean a couple fiber Echo trimmer air filters this week. When got through they looked new. What do you think about this before and after photo.

Do you merely use water or add some sort of detergent? I was astonished to find that new looking filter was the work of a u/c.
Must try it on my air compressor filter that I attempted to was in soapy water with limited results.

Of course you got to use some soap as you got to break the chemical bonds. I am using Alcojet 12.5 pH soap 2 tablespoons per 10 liters. The results you see at 240 watts for 30 minutes.

Now that air compressor next time try adding bleach to the water. You be surprised at how much it cleans just sitting over night. I use that method of cleaning on hair combs and brushes to clean them for years before I got the UC.

Looking forward to experimenting. Have no idea what ph level is in dishwashing liquid bit I'll try that first before hunting down some 12.5.

I will give it a go when I get the base.... may as well, who knows the carb might be OK.

I put the motor on a massport base. Just to test the motor.

Pulled it many times with raw fuel in plug hole.... no luck
Cleaned out the jelly out of the carb bowl, and started with my bosch electric drill special starter......
It started and ran ok, but only at idle... I need to adjust the screw on bottom of the bowl, so i am hoping i can adjust that to bring revs up, or check points.
But pleased to get rip van winkle started after a long sleep......................

then I'll need another base a s this massport one is meant for a long shaft motor......

all good, things take time and it's all learning on every project.

Got the revs going..... mowed the front lawn.
But it's a bit of a monster. leaks fuel onto the base overnight.

I took it to scrap metal dealer to dump it, and the guy said wait, you will get something for this...... $5
What a deal....
