This is my method of replacing the cup starters on the old full crank Victa 24's that still have a lifetime of service to give. Grass will continue to grow and will still need cutting and with general maintenance these machines can go on forever.

And the beauty of this is the pull starters cost me $13.25 delivered. Bit of work fitting them but the end result is a working machine again

Is that a Honda/chonda pull starter?

Yes they suit the Honda, but he has now upped the postage, was free with the previous ones I have bought

I recently got one off a Gardener's Choice (Kmart in house brand) recently and it will bolt straight on to my Victa V40 Chonda.
The only problem with the existing starter is the pawls won't spread out enough when I pull the rope, despite having oiled it. is there more I can do to save chucking it in the bin?

All depends on if you can use the cup off the Gardeners Choice, I might have to turnsomething up to get things to fit, easy with a lathe not so easy without

It's always worth looking around at other brands when it comes to replacing obsolete parts. When I was looking for starters to suit my old 1960s era Southern Cross KXD's, I discovered that Tecumseh produce a recoil starter for their snowblowers that is an exact fit. The style has hardly changed since the days of the old Clinton engines. They are also very cheap to buy, now that they are being mass produced in China. The only drawback is the starter cups are not cheap and still very difficult to obtain here in Australia, although they are available everywhere in the USA. Postage from the US these days is horrendous. You can virtually double the cost of your item and add on $10 or so just for the postage. Most sellers prefer to send items with tracking these days, which can really add to the costs. So a $3 starter cup can end up costing $35 by the time you get it over here. Why they don't make and sell the starters and cups together is beyond me. At present there is an oversupply of brand new starters on the market but no cups!

I SHOULD have grabbed the entire Gardeners Choice mower but chose just to remove the starter.
I agree they should be sold as a kit. Maybe ask the seller of the starter if they could add a cup as well?
This is why it is a waste of time buying any of the impact starters I see on Ebay as you need the matching cup as well as the special cup washer. They always just list the starter.

The pull starter I use as I listed above comes with the starter cup and for $14 they are exceptional value. They always require a bit of work to fit, some more than others but these are a tough starter. Fitting them on most of the early Victa cup starters requires lifting the cowl about 14mm which is a time consuming pain,but fitting them on machines like the Victa 24 is a big improvement on the old Victa setup. People using these bigger machines can't be bothered with dodgy equipment, they have to just get out there and slash the grass

Yes very slick indeed. I would have thought they were less durable with all the plastic bits. There you go.

This particular pull starter is stronger than many others because when the pawls expand out they locate on a shoulder on the outer side of the cup giving it much more strength that unsupported pawls

I've never been too impressed with the way the Victa pawls grab the cup. Once they start slipping, there is no going back. The metal shavings begin.

Yeah, I think I know what you are describing.

Had another play with this one today, too cold to be bothered doing too much, changed the barrel/piston so I could fit an LM carb, new set of rings and this machine will be still going after my use by date

Crikey, you must be one of the few to set out to replace a G3 with an LM, though I can understand why in your case.

There is a million more parts out there for the LM carbs of which I have buckets of them and they are such a brilliant carby. All the G3 throttle levers and cables I have have all gone past their good use days
