I don't know but there is a previous post where a member got one for $50, so the short answer is no, but I would say that they are rare. Interestingly today I spied a Whirlwind edger for $80 in a consignment sellers warehouse. It was a two stroke but interestingly it's design was very similar to the SB 38, which beggars the question, did SB copy the Whirlwind? The blade setup is interesting in that they are short blades attached to a flat bar, which allows the blade to give if it strikes a hard object.

Well, as bellarinelawns says, it'd need to be in near showroom condition to be worth $200!

Rarity doesn't usually translate to valuable, in OPE collecting. Except for the few machines that become sought after by 'cult followers' - the Victa Model 4 Automatic mower is the prime example of that.

Whirlwind wasn't unknown for incorporating other manufacturers' features in their machines, but who knows if they or SB was the copier, or if they both copied from elsewhere!

With a really simple machine like an edger, the points to look at are firstly engine age and condition, then the design and condition of the cut depth adjustment, and that all guarding is fitted and functional. And maybe the condition of the wheels, as some edgers have up to 6 of them. Belts and blades are easily replaced, so not of great concern.

My personal preference is a machine where the blade rotation 'pulls' the machine along, and for a disc blade as used on Rover and some Victa TaC models.

Cheers,
Gadge

I'll get a photo of the Whirlwind and then compare it to the Scott. It may well be a re badged machine which is common in the outdoor power equipment industry. If I can get the price down , I might get it to put in the billiard room along side my Whirlwind mower.

G'day GM Gadge, Crumpet and BL,
I feel Gadge has expressed a true view on this.
I have often said, "Rarity doesn't usually translate to value".

Although, BL, I wouldn't describe the Model 38 as rare.
They seem to come up for auction regularly, but not too common now.

In terms of design, edgers aren't too different, and I guess this is why
so many small makers made them as well.

So, let's look at the Whirlwind.

All very interesting.

Well crumpet,
It's your call, as to what it's worth to you. I guess that depends somewhat, on how hard it is to find decent secondhand edgers in your area. It may be OK value, if it has only seen domestic use.

If that Briggs has 'easy-spin starting' on the starter housing, it's a pre-1982 model. Post-1982 all had the Magnetron electronic ignition, and were so marked.

Cheers,
Gadge

This is a late 1975 or into 1976 model. This is identified by the apple green colour along with the ID label sticker which was when the Challenge group took over SB.

Honestly $80 is top dollar from where I see it.

I've got one and had it out at my last garage sale and the highest I was offered was $30 which I knocked back. These where made over quite a number of years with the originals being issued with the Kirby Lauson engine.

Cheers,
BB.
