hi all,i have just recently had a conversation with a honda parts guy about a g40 for my old red,he inform's me he just supplied parts for the first model greenfield that is going in a museum,he claims that the first model ran under powered G30's!the next model went to G40,he has given me Ken from grnfld's contact number's,i'm wondering why no one has spoken to Ken before?.the guy i spoke with goes by the gumtree name of honda used parts, his name is grant and seems very confident with this topic,Jack a question to you if i may, would you be interested in taking over this conversation with these guy's i will supply contact numbers if you are keen,i am waist deep in other thing's at the moment and also i'm not the greatest communicator when it comes to these thing's,let me know,if you can't i will cowboy up and do it.cheer's

G'day gml ,Jack, folks,

The G30/G40 thing has had me wondering. The obituary article says they ran a '4.5hp G30'.
This is a bit of a mystery. The G40 is 4.5hp. I'd been happy to put it down to a typo in the article. That was before this latest bit of news smile

I've been trawling the interweb for information on the G30 and G40 and have drawn a complete blank. Mainly trying to find HP ratings and physical dimensions

So why havnt I spoken to Greenfield given that I've thought so long and hard about this one? That's a good question - a really good question! I've got no real answer and to be honest I'm feeling like a bit of a dill at the moment! History research 101 - go to the source!

Very excited to see what comes of this latest development!

Cheers,

morning prd,i found a G30 manual on ebay i will go back and look again,i think you would be the perfect person to take on this conversation/interview with Ken, you already have more info on greenfield's than most and you are "verbose"!. my attention span fails me on phone's i need to read thing's many times before "i get it" so a call to this man would be lost with all the thing's running around in my mind, if you want these numbers i will pm you if not i will get around to it.now i have to tend to the tomatoe's, chilli tree, and feed the bloody lorikeet's,cheer's... ps also the honda guy told me the first honda motor was all white

G'day prd and gml

Apologies for the delay.
I have to say I have not looked at this.

I feel a single approach is the way to go.
I am out of my depth, so I'm happy for prd to proceed.

Sad, but true Norm ... I hate swimming!
I used to fear drowning ... in the shower!

I think gml's early Honda engine image is revealing.
There seems to be little info out there ... on Honda or Greenfield.

Evening Folks,

Spoke to both Ken and Grant today. Ken has left Greenfield but was very obliging. He was there for 20 odd years. He says 'No 2' machine is still at the factory! And after speaking to Grant its almost certain this it the machine he supplied parts for in that the job was for Greenfield and it was for a display machine. Ken says 'No 1' was dismantled to make the production drawings. He told the tale that Theo modified (welded) the fuel tank on No. 1 because the bonnet wouldn't close! Production machines of course had the cutout in the bonnet around the tank that we all know.

Ken confirmed that No.2 has a G30 but said the production machines typically had G40. I asked how many G30 machines were produced. He said not many, he thought, and suggested they may not have been a 'true' production engine type and described how even in recent years the first couple or few production machines of a type might be produced with non production engines that were sourced early in the process and differed from the final production units. I guess we need sales material from the period to sort this one out.

I've been given a contact name at the factory that I'll call next week. We'll see what comes of that.

Cheers,

P.S. Grant says the G41 was the 'white' engine?

Morning LRT, gml,

Yup, I think that's what the gentleman was referring to, LMT. Do you happen to have any information on these old Hondas? The old interweb seems to be distinctly lacking.

gml, I'm not sure Ken is the man for this. When I started to discuss the differences between our machines and the other reds he seemed to be a bit at sea. His knowledge of the prehistoric days seems to be based on stuff he'd heard (from Theo mainly,I guess).

I guess your question is: 'is there a physical difference between the G30 frames and the G40 frames?' This is one we need to get to the bottom of. First stop is the No.2 at the factory. This is on my list for next week.

Something I forgot to mention in the last post is that Grant mentioned that the engine he was offering to you is a G42. A stooge round the interweb shows them to have a higher tank than the one fitted to my G40 and G50 machines.

I'm keel to get hold of some dimension data on the G30 and the G40. If there is no physical difference in size then......but if the G30 is smaller physically.............

Hi PRD, unfortunately I don't have any information on them.

Do you want any measurements of the G41?

Hi GML,

It is 16" (41cm) tall from the mounting base to the top of fuel filler cap and 16" (41cm) wide from the oil bath air filter to the opposite edge of the tank.

My pleasure. Let me know if you need any other measurements of it. Do you think it is worth rebuilding?
