Hi all. My mower engine cuts out when I engage the cutting disc. It seems like a safety switch is activating. Unfortunately the machine is full of safety switches. Has anyone struck this problem and, if it is a safety switch, how do I disable it? Looking forward to your replies. Cheers Glen D.
Not familiar with your particular machine but you can try putting a zip tie around the cutter safety switch to keep it in the disengaged position. If that solves the problem it is then your choice to either leave it like that or replace the switch.
Hello Glen and AT Stigas sold here from about 1979, when Rover introduced the clever articulated Park 2000 Machine.
It is true that these machines abound with safety interlock switches, and there is a big sound difference between an engine 'dying' under load (like blade engagement) and dying because of ignition cut-out.
As aussietrev has said, it is an easy process to isolate a defective switch. I presume the switch in question will be on the blade engagement lever.
I do feel though that we will need some photos (and model number) to help further.
Hi Jack, Thank you for your reply. When I engage the disc the motor doesn't die as in running down it is a distinct cut, motor running - then stop. I'll take some photos and upload them. Your help is much appreciated. Cheers Glen D.
Jack a couple of things you can check, with the motor turned off can you rotate/move the blade/cutting bar, I'm looking for a seized deck bearing or something stopping the cutter from rotating. We are trying to work out iff the motor is stalling or being killed by an ignition cut off, they have a different reaction. Another question, does it stall if you attempt to drive. If none of the above it is a safety switch on the cutter somewhere
Hi NormK & Jack, I took a couple of photos but, where the wires are isn't real accessible for photos. I've got to find how to download them first. The No: on the mower is 2011-s/n 140780, Code 2T0030281/11 Type ELV 63. When the mower cutting disc is out of gear you can't turn the disc but, in gear you can. I pulled the lead on the left side near the lever off and the mower wouldn't start so I put it back on and all is well. There are two leads connected near the lever, (one I took off and the other I didn't) but I'm not sure if they are to do with the cut out. Not being mechanical I am a little reluctant to fiddle. Hence I came to the experts. Cheers Glen D.
Glen, take both the wires off and put a piece of wire into each end of the connectors and that will give it a circuit and that hopefully is the answer. Give it a try and see what happens and if it works the switch needs replacing. Be careful when you have it wired this way
Hi Glen, when I said be careful it is because you are bypassing a safety switch. I was only suggesting this as a way to test if the switch was the causing the problem
Hi gml, I know I ask myself why nearly every day and I always have in the back of my mind that I can fix this. What sixe motor did it have and what are your plans for it. Any idea if you can get a steering cable for it ?
G'day folks, A common trap with buying engineless ride-ons is, that they are usually also missing the engine shaft pulley/coupling.
Which always seem to be very exy as a new OEM part, and a non-standard type, so there aren't any aftermarket alternatives...
PS: This webpage http://view.stiga-store.com/villa-2015.html has IPL's for the Villa series back to 1989, so gml's machine should be there somewhere. Nb: although it's a French webpage, the model descriptions are the English ones, and the IPL's are in Swedish and English!
Cheers, Gadge

hi Norm, yes i got a steering cable on the way,it had a b/s 12.5 ic motor from what i can find out, this is a long slow project just something to play around with,i just need to keep busy mate,i alway's end up with oddball stuff!, hey Gadge thank's mate that will help heaps, seem's part's will have to come from o/s,and yes the engine pulley set up will be the big challenge(and the belts setup) cheer's.... UPDATE.. make that no on the cable Norm.....
Hi gml I can't help with the blades, but just looking back through the thread I see you picked this machine up for $75, I can see why you couldn't help yourself. A good rideon seat will cost you more than that.
here it is ATM ready to go! i had to "cut and shut" the body a little and chase some other parts but learnt a few thing's also, these had a over heating problem i was told due to enclosed engine so i opened it up with some holes,
