One of my ride on's is a old Victa 5/26 with a B&S 5HP and is fitted with what seems to be called a variable speed pulley as part of the drive system. As I understand it the pulley assembly is made up of 2 pulleys one on top of the other with the outer 2 discs of both pulleys fixed to an inner bush and the inner 2 discs of the 2 pulleys fixed together but spin on the bush that secures the outer 2 discs. I am interested in if parts for this pulley are still available and if parts for this mower are available in general. I believe my pulley is slipping due to the wrong tensioning spring(s) fitted. the pulley was originally seized but after disassembly is now working in what I think is the correct way.

I thought these 5/26s had gears like that in a manual gearbox?

All The 5/26 does have a forward and reverse gearbox but the variable speed pulley is completely separate to this and is as follows. From the Victa lawn tractor series 0, Model 2/26 manual, page 24, item 45, Part number TM60209A (variable speed pulley assembly) and Part number TM60228A (pulley and bracket assembly. Page 22 describes the pulley (in part) as follows- Note-if mower fails to respond to speed control lever it is possible that the variable speed pulley is seized. Apply a few drops of light oil to each side of the assembly to loosen. (goes on from here re not getting lube on belts etc) In short I have had this pulley apart, lubricated the bronze bush in the center that the inner pulley halves spin on, reassembled and still have this random lack of power.

Cliff are you sure that you have the correct belt on the pulley? Belts should be: 1. 754-0241 35" x 5/8" ('B' Section) Secondary Drive 2. 754-0240 38 & 3/16" x 5/8" ('B' Section) Primary Drive If the two belts are not 'B' Section your drive will not work correctly and also if the springs are not correct

Sorry for the late reply, have been off line or only occasional internet access. Back now (I hope) If you are still following this thread I may be interested in acquiring gearbox and pulley but have no idea where to start re swapping something etc. ?

Bruce As per my reply to GgordonN we have been off line due to, at least in part, a defective router on our computer. I am back now (I hope) and have studied your reply. If this thread is still being viewed I have the following info to offer. The belt part numbers you have listed would be way too long to fit my 5/26. Going off my IBS (Independent Bearings and Spares) catalogue and also off my 5/26 parts manual the belts I needed and have installed are 754-0187 (5/8"W x 24"L - outside) for the Lower variable speed drive belt and 754-0136 (5/8"W x 29"L - inside) for the Top variable speed drive belt. Both belts fit length wise OK and appear to "B" section (5/8"). I agree the tensioning springs may be a problem as there were non on the machine when I acquired it so I used other Victa springs I had that appeared to be able to provide a fair bit of tension. I believe I need two springs. One is the Variable speed spring (Victa P/N TM60172A and the other is the Extension spring (Victa P/N TM60184A) Would you know where I can purchase these from. ?

As per the parts list the belt numbers are: 754-0241 35 x 5/8 Secondary Drive 754-0241 38" 3/16 x 5/8 Primary Drive These are the correct belt if we are talking about the Victa 5-26 (139-501-000 thru 139-508-000,139-511-000 thru 139-514-000) which is fitted with a variable speed pulley assy part number 717-0884. The variable speed pulley work on belt tension by the two springs with these part numbers: 732-0056 7.58" long 732-0308 .50" OD x 6.37" Hope that this is of some help.

Bruce According to the model ID plate (or what's left of it) my model No is 132-402-612 followed by 5.26 D222A. Is there a clear owners instruction and spare parts manual I can get a hold of on the forum as mine has been copied and is fairly unclear. I am happy to make a contribution to the forum/site. The springs sound right, do you know how/where I can get them ?

Cliff the machine is an MTD made for victa some years back. I can scan the parts list that I have for the victa 5-26 model but will take about a week to do and then I will uploaded to the parts list and manuals area. To get access you have to click My Stuff and then click subscriptions.

Cliff, If you have any problems downloading information just send me a PM and I will either send it by email or give you a link so that you can download the information as we are having some issues with the parts list and manuals area at present.

Bruce I have tried to open either of the documents you have loaded but keep getting a message stating "Adobe reader could not open the .pdf because it is either not a supported file type of because the file has been damaged (for example it was sent as an e mail attachement and wasnt correctly decoded) Does this make sense ?

Cliff, I am having the same problem but will have it sorted out by tomorrow night. Seems to be something wrong with my uploading as we have corrected all the other download issues from before.
