So I have a Greenfield Honda, I bought it to use while rebuilding my E2000. Problem is the drive clutch is slipping, called the mower shop on the off chance they were still available and of course they haven't been available for years. I wasn't at all surprised, so of course my question is any ideas here ? Is there someplace to get one? can something else be adapted? Can it be rebuilt somewhere? Have I got no hope?

Jace, do you mean that the wheel drive clutch slips, in forward and/or reverse?

Or are you referring to the cutter clutch, the one mounted at the front, on the engine PTO shaft?

In either case, relining should be possible.

The parts diagrams in THIS past thread are the best we have available for the early series HD-8, and should be of some help.

I recently redid mine. I haven't actually put them to the test as the machine is an ongoing project.

Firstly, be aware that the engine clutch on mine was an asbestos compound. I replaced it and the wheel drive clutches with 1/8" cork cut from a sheet. I had a heck of a time finding the sheeting. Everyone could sell me rubberised cork but I doubt this would give a good grip and examination of original Greenfield replacement linings for other models suggested they are made from dry cork.

I finally found some dry cork sheeting at spotlight of all places (in the flower arranging section). I'm a bit concerned about quality but was out of options. It seems ok but time will tell. If you find a better source, let me know.

I used a good quality contact adhesive. Best quality. Set the clutch up on a flat surface and weighted it for a day to get a good bond. Thoroughly clean the alloy with acetone and scotchbrite first.

I can't help feeling that Greenfield had a good reason for using a high-temperature [hence asbestos] reinforced facing material on that engine clutch. It will be interesting to see how well cork lasts there.

I was thinking along the lines of getting that relining done by one of the firms that reline industrial clutches.
Someone like BCA Friction Materials in Sydney, for example - they seem to do some interesting one-offs.

The asbestos facing was something I'd considered too when I did the job. I also though about the physical size of the thing compared to the wheel clutches.

I figured that the clutch would be engaged once after start and stay engaged with very little slippage after that (???) and that in my case the machine is basically in retirement and will never be slashing acreage again. Also, I figured for the cost of a bit of cork the experiment was worth doing - and I really didn't know what else to try.

I didn't even think of sending it to specialist organisation and I guess even if I had I'd probably have decided against it based on cost and the fact the machine is just a retired curiosity piece - and I'm well up for the cork experiment!

also try contacting Greenfield in QLD directly.. Ken Harris from Parts was a great help to me.

Yep, easy to find on FleaBay.
Greenfield have used only two sizes of drive clutch linings AFAIK - 225mm[9"] OD/165mm ID from HD-8 to Anniversary models, and 246mm OD/177mm ID for the Evolution and FastCut series.
