Assuming all else is OK (not seized): broken piston/gudgeon pin/conrod/big end bearing?

If the valves don't move either, possible broken crankshaft?

If the top flywheel spins but not the rest of it, sheared key?

It looks to be in pretty good condition Sean well worth putting a new motor in it. You can get new 13 hp motors for about $400

This is going to be one of those Sean gotcha moments I bet. Once enough spinners have come in he'll post some photos with the bonnet up to show the engine has thrown a leg out of bed and the conrod is sticking out of the block somewhere for sure.

Probably right, was wondering why he'd gone quiet for a while... But I'm happy to bite, it's always entertaining...

Maybe the piston has gone out in protest over being associated with such a flimsy piece 'o shyte.

Not sure there Sean, the torx screws are possibly holding the wheel to some flange fitted to the shaft, you can only try removing them and the stud and see what happens. If you are going to lever it up, go carefully. If it doesn't appear to move will have to rethink the situation. What motor is it?

thanks norm
this is the keyway

as the flywheel still moves the shaft i am assuming that this is more of an internal issue as pitrack kindly pointed out. i will start with the rocker cover removal, to rule our broken crankshaft. then go from there. am i correct in saying that that key didnt look to healthy.
thanks fellas

Ok now you will have to make up a puller to fit in the torx screw holes with a bolt through the center to push on the crank. The key damage won't be causing any issues, what actually is the problem, is the crank locked up? any oil in the motor? You won't find much looking at this part of the motor, you need to pull the head off and have a look inside

thanks mate. i have come to the conclusion that this motors big end has a problem, i heard tell that i may be able to get a replacement for 400 dollars. pray tell where norm. the parts for this are quite pricy but the time involved to pull it apart to find the source of the problem is another thing. I am trying to help this fella. for free. yes i know it is not the flashest machine but he seems to love it??
thanks all

Sean I'm pretty sure this mob ship interstate, I'm sure I put a bloke in QLD onto them and they shipped no problems and it wasn't expensive, I think it cost about $40.
Mower looks to be in reasonable shape so well worth sticking a new motor on it

thanks again norm.
no crotchet tonight, maybe later.
only met this machine today. in my opinion the crankshaft is phucked, due to the smashed conrod banging in to it. i am still of the belief that this mower was run with low black oil and cooked. any diagnosis would be awesome.
the young fella that has blown his mums ride on i spinning out

Sean, no oil will do it every time, sorry I can't help with a cheap fix because there isn't one and I'm sorry for the young bloke

With Norm there, quite likely it was low/out of oil. Ask 'em when they last did the oil change or checked the level, when you get the 'huh?' you'll know for sure. Although I'm sure you saw what oil (or remains rhereof) came out when you opened it.

Mowing on a steep slope a lot can also do it 'cos it won't throw the oil around properly, exacerbated by low/old oil further.

Even if the son was trying to prove 'red ones go faster' if Mummy hasn't been maintaining her equipment it's not entirely his fault.

I think best answer is Norm's and Mum's more likely to stump up the $$$ if you can get her to think it's partially her fault. You've got a good manner, Sean, I reckon you can probably pull it off. You can point out the importance of oil with the broken conrod (whoops that's my usual baseball bat diplomacy shining through again smile )

Although you may need to check the replacement carefully for compatibility- controls match up, alternator/charging, key start or not, etc.

Not to mention the output shaft. Start with the motor model no and work from there- check with the motor vendor?
