Hi,

I have been collecting various vc160s for the past few months, of which most have been looking pretty sad and are in need of alot of work. I have started stripping down a couple of them with the hopes of creating a working example of a great lawnmower, and also having one of each of the vc160 models.

Are there any tips that anyone could possibly provide to point me in the right direction? I am chasing alot of replacement parts, ie. New throttle control, air intake hose, air filter housing etc as these items on most of my mowers are buggered. I have noticed that they are now discontinued on this site. Does anyone know where I could acquire new or good condition items? I am unsure which air filter & cutting blades to purchase for the vc160 mk 1,2,3 mowers. If any one could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Finally, I have acquired a red vc160 Mk 3 or 4 (I am unsure which mark) as per the pictures. This was the mower that originally started my interest in these machines. I was wondering whether this colour is legitimate, as it only has no evidence of being repainted.

Cheers.

Hi Rontrot and :welcome: to the outdoorking family.
It seems to be a VC-160 Mark II as I can tell by your picture.

That in the circle is the locking pin for the handle. Now only the Mark I and mark II had those pins like that. How do I know it's not a Mark I?
That's because it has the 2 pins for the connecting rod.In the picture below. The Mark I only had the one.

Ok sorry to say but there was no red VC-160's only green ones.I'd say that at some point somebody has painted it.I can also see that it appears the the cowl also has been painted as I can see where the paint is lifting.
It is cool though makes me wished I has a spare one to paint red.
There was one three versions of the VC-160 and three versions of the VC-125.
VC-160 Mark I,II & III Restoration
If you look at this link you can see the three VC-160's I have been restoring, and here for the two VC-125's I have been restoring.
VC-125 Mark I & II Restoration
It does look like it has at some point had a fuel tank replaced as it has the black tank, they were originally green. However the spare parts tanks were black.
There was no Mark IV of either of these mowers.
I'm not so sure as to where you can get new parts for them.I myself haven't started looking for them.I should as I also need parts for them. There could still be bits and pieces here in the store.I just haven't looked yet.
If you check my restoring pages you should find a lot of your questions answered there,ie cutting disc.Any other questions please ask.
It's good to see some else is keen on these mowers.

Here for a good time, not a long time.

Does look cool in red but as blumbly said they wore only green smile. The air filter housings are quite hard to find in good condition these days but i hope you can track a few down.

Hi mate and welcome.

I have a brand new (Non genuine but looks VERY close) throttle control and a good cable if you need it you can have if you pay for postage (Or you can pick up if your in adelaide). The cable is from a V80 so may be a different length to yours but worth a try PM me your details and I can send it to you. I also have boxes of other new and used bits and pieces so if you list what you want I'll have a look around and get back to you.

I believe also there is a snorkel (air hose) on ebay at the moment.

There are actually a few guys here in Adelaide who are wrecking them at the moment. try local rubbish tips, mower shops etc. Here there are a few mower shops that take old ones as trade ins. the sell the alloy bases at scrap price to hot rod clubs who smelt them and make plaques out of them. If you get in quick you can buy them before the clubs get them. Good source of parts for scrap price! I've been thinking about getting them to make a VC 160 plaque out of the base of a VC160. pleasing symmetry to that I think.

Thanks,
Pete.

Thanks for the info fellas.

I was unsure about which mk the red VC was due to the fact that it had a plain black zip starter, with a plastic bottomed g3 carburetor. By the looks, someone could have painted it and maybe changed the parts with whatever they could have found at the time.

I'm based in the Hunter Valley in NSW and find it pretty hard to find any parts from these mowers whatsoever. It seems that most of them reside in VIC, or atleast the best working examples of these machines. Wish that I lived a bit closer, I would be keen to pick those parts up from Adelaide and see what they have to offer. Do you know if they would post items Pete? Also does anyone know which exact throttle cable & blades would fit a mk II from this site? as I am stuck trying to work out which entry is correct.

Cheers,

Aaron.

Mk II restoration

I have almost completed my mk II restoration and this is where I am currently up to. I fully rebuilt the engine, sandblasted and honed the barrel, put new piston and rings in it. I had to helicoil the spark plug thread on the alloy head as the previous owner had stripped it. I have fully assembled the engine and applied black enamel to the barrel. Replaced points and condenser and timed the engine. Placed the engine on the cutting deck ready to go, I will probably try and start it this weekend, hopefully with everything going to plan.

Looking at that base it looks more like a Mark I base to me,as it looks to only have the one post for the connecting link.Engine number should start with 5270,but I take it your interested in keeping it original. That's cool it does look as though you have put some work into it.A little lighter on the grey and it would be almost the same colour as the VC-160 auto drives.Good job Rontrot glad to see someone else keeping the mighty 2 strokes alive.

Hi mate,

Most people will post most things. If the guys in Adelaide wont post them let me know; I can buy them for you and post up to you if you cover costs. Look on Gumtree and there is a guy in Seaford Rise who is wrecking them. If no luck try the guy in Morphett Vale (They are both advertising lawnmowers for sale quite regularly). If no luck there try the guy who works at Ampol Virginia (08) 83809154 - the ampol number not his own - They do servicing and repairs there and the 2 guys both have an impressive supply of hard to find bits and pieces - If anyone is interested one guy there has 2 victa twins he is parting out.

These VC's really arent too hard to get bits for - theyre just reasonably hard to find complete ones in good condition.

Good luck and your grey one looks good!

Pete
