Hi,

I have a victa 550 self propelled mower here, I had to pull the gearbox apart because one of the mounting lugs snapped off and had to be rewelded.

Now i'm wondering what oil should be used to refill it and how much, I was thinking of filling it to the top.

as for your rear axel/diff i thought that bearing greese would do but not sure...ken

Mine doesn't have provision for a catcher unfortunatly, apparently I can fit a mulch plug, i'm trying to get hold of one but not much luck yet.

I like your mower, unfortunatly I cant help with info on what it is.

Will give the grease a shot, it will be less likely to leak compared to oil.

Im thinking that the top on is a 505 SP



If you are handy with the tin work you could make your own mulch plug up out of 1mm or 1.5mm steel. I was thinking of messing with a few of the mowers i have here, ive got some rusty bases i can cut up to get the curved parts.

If you flip the mower over you just want to make it like its a bowl.
They dont have much arch so so i doubt you would have to fill that void as it sweeps up.

Just not sure how you would hold it in. I suppose one bolt hole drilled in the base would not hurt.


Same deal, a catcher could be made or bought and modified to fit that. The old side throw rovers had catchers, clipped on the mower and had an outbound wheel. My grandfather had a similar type catcher on his Cox ride on.

hope you don't mind me asking you about the Victa in the picture you posted with this post. I am looking at buying a mower that looks very alike although the pictures are from different angles. Can you tell me which model your one is?

I would be really grateful for any help you could give me.

Just for the record, THIS past thread just mentions repacking these with 'Energrease'.

Which is just the generic BP brand for their greases - I'd say any general purpose automotive NLGI#2 lithium 'chassis grease' will be fine. Use a moly [MoS2] enhanced grade if you like, but it's probably not necessary.

Pierssy, as nobody else has stepped up on this one, that mower looks a lot like a 'Pro 505SP' model, as it's known in Oz.

The Victa 'Pro' series are their heavy duty models, intended for the professional 'lawnie' contractor, and local council, market. 505 = 505mm width of cut, in that model number. These models haven't changed a great deal over time, since 1984 when the Victa half-crankshaft PowerTorque 2-stroke engine was introduced.
