Hello ODK history Lovers

The Brisbane Ekka is one of the institutions of Brisbane and it is the largest annual event
held in Queensland. Set on about 22 hectares it is located in the inner Brisbane suburb of
Bowen Hills.

The two photographs I have here come from the Brisbane City Council archives and date from 1938.
They depict the one lawnmower, a 30 or 36 inch British Dennis. The pram handle is evidence
that the machine cannot be older than about 1936 meaning that this was a relatively new machine
when the photographs were taken:-

The photographs were taken on the main show ring looking out toward a row of trees that once
fronted Gregory Terrace. In the background is the roofline of the historic John Reid Pavilion.

These large Dennis machines were well-regarded as solid, heavy duty machines.
They were bought by many of the larger councils for park and sports ground maintenance.
This machine would have been imported, I believe, by the great Sydney lawnmower
manufacturer, importer, and seller, Alex Grahame Pty. Ltd.

The rest is history.
