The ride on has no cutter. Is just for the kids. Can live without the brakes but would like to have them working. I am in western Australia. Thanks David.

Hi DrDave, welcome to Outdoorking.

There is a combined owner manual and parts list for that machine in the manuals section. Here are the most relevant bits for your current question:

You may notice that Item 52 is described as "Brake", but it has no obvious connection with the disk brake, Items 76 to 81. It may be the cutter brake.

I don't know if this will provide all the information you need or not - please let us know.

HI. Thanks for reply.I had seen that and used the part numbers at a local mower shop. They could not match them to victa. Saying it may have been something else (maybe a Murray) that had been rebranded. The brake pads i can get. There is just a couple of parts missing that i was hoping to find. Would be happy with secondhand complete caliper. Regards David.

Victa (and Rover as well) has never made ride-on mowers. All of their machines have been rebadged from other companies. Some of them have been Murray, and if I recall correctly there have been some MTD and even some Cox mowers wearing their brand.

Now that you have stated what you are looking for, let's see if any members have parts available or can tell us what the 8-34E actually was, so you can go to the manufacturer.

Here is a picture: someone may recognise the shape of it.

My engine was stamped about 1973. Maybe it is from that era. Thanks for the picture. That is what it looks like. Might scroll through some other brands and see what i come up with.Thanks.

Yep, Victa has never built a ride-on. Rover used to - maybe grumpy is thinking of Masport, or another local 'rebrander' of ride-ons - there have been a few.

The earliest 1970's Victa ride-ons, of which the 8-34E is one, all seem to have been 'MTD Yardman' models.

But it's damn near impossible to cross-reference the Victa model with the MTD model number, without both the MTD Model and Serial numbers - both are required, to search on the MTD Manuals website.
There was probably once a sticker with these details under the seat, but so far ODK members haven't had any luck finding an intact one.
It's not surprising that Victa dealers can't find any parts info, on a machine that's pushing 40 years old, really. Very few of them have been in the game that long! The US situation isn't much better, for these old machines.

In past threads, the closest MTD manual/parts list grumpy has come up with, is that for the MTD 133-480 (pull start) and 133-485 (electric start). These are 34" cut models from the right era, but use a 4 speed gearbox, not 5 as for the Victa.
However, the diagram for the brake parts is identical, and uses the same key numbers, as the one above.

It's downloadable [3.6MB PDF] from
http://manuals.mtdproducts.com/mtd/DocGetter?doc=770-4147.pdf

Have look, and see if you can work out what bits you might be missing. This is a very basic mechanical caliper, which just uses the main driven sprocket as the brake disc.

Cheers,
Gadge

Thanks Gadge, you are one of the few people who seem to be able to help resolve these things.

I can't get your link to work, by the way.

That's odd.
I lifted it straight from your old post in this thread [which is worth linking in this topic anyway]; https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=23482

See if it works from there - it did for me.

It does redirect to another URL, which may work OK: http://manuals.mtdproducts.com/mtd/GetFile.do?filename=770-4147.pdf

Cheers,
Gadge

I think the problem is at my end, Gadge. It just returned me to the thread each time I clicked on it. Then a moment ago I looked in my downloads folder and found 8 copies of it (I don't give up easily on these things). So, all is well, except it seems Firefox no longer tells me it has completed some mission I've given it.

yep. I did see that also. Took those part numbers but we looked under victa. Will try again under mtd. Hopefully could have some luck then. Searching showed caliper made by Kesley and Hayes. Thanks David.

That's the first time I've even heard of Lawnflite mowers. We don't seem to see much British stuff in Australia these days.

From memory there was actually 3 different variants of the 8/34E victa. If i remember right two different types of brakes. Three different transmission setups.

You can buy those little round brake pads. I think Bruce has them in the outdoorking store.

The rear sprocket is the disc.
