I got a MTD Yardman which was included in the sale of the house. Doesn't looked like it was maintained to well over its life. It didn't run to bad but would never be able to go up any slopes/hills. Ended up replacing all the drive belts. It ran great for the 1st 2 times and now just won't run unless it 6th gear and struggles to move. I'm thinking of replacing the variable-speed pulley (no2 on diagram). Would there be anything else I should consider changing? Anyone recommend a place to get the pulley from? Part number is 956-04015a.

Don't replace it unless the bearings are completey gone. Pull it out, Its probably just sticky, clean it out with some kero or something, make sure it slides up and down under its own weight, put a couple drops of oil on the shaft and you will be good to go. Also just try a transmission reset, put it in neutral in 6th at full revs, let the pedal right out for a bit and then try it in drive.

I agree with nath, the variable speed pulley is very robust, and I would suggest checking you idler/tensioner pulleys and springs as well as lubing up the pulley... laugh.
Some pics of the machine and problem area would also be great

I'll give that ago for now and see what happens. Phoned local mower shop and they have 1/2 dozen variable speed pulleys there as they say they are pretty common. They are $115 and don't really have the money at the moment to do that especially if that isn't the problem. Transmission reset doesn't help. Mower only runs in 6th gear and that is pretty slow. Eventually stops. Runs ok until it heats up (say 5 minutes). I just thought that the pulley would be worn out so the belts are slipping on the pulley???

Well pull it apart and was a little bit of rubber arouns the pulley which may of been from the new belts. Cleaned it up and lubed the centre post so it can slide up and down. Then checked the 2 bearings where the pulley shaft goes into. Top one had a fair bit of dirt build up on. Cleaned them and stuck bearing oil on them. Started it up and ran fine. Thanks so much, will probably get a new pulley eventually but only own a acre block and pretty much all flat ground.
