Hi guys, Got a 2 stroke victa tilt-a-cut power edger with S90 engine pack. When I got it I was told not running for awhile. Poured some fresh 2 stroke fuel in it tried to start it after a couple of pulls it tries to start and run. The thing was blowing a lot of white smoke and ran for 10-15 seconds before cutting out. It's the same story every time you try to start it. Today I took the thing apart to figure out what's going on. The spark plug was clean but has very overpowering petrol smell. When pulling the motor apart there wasn't much of the gaskets left. This is what the inside's looked like: ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2013/10/full-6403-12934-img_5162.jpg) I've cleaned the insides, I'm gonna get a new head gasket, tubes. What else should I be looking at to resolve this problem.

looks like that headgaskets been blown for a time , just clean it all up and do 'o' rings at the same time . a good a start as any , under the starter and big n small on the inlet a quick caby clean and might be good to go but it depends on how far you like to go with it ?

I just want to get it in running order. When I removed the hose connected to the de-compressor on the carby the hose was hard like a rock. When removing the hose the white plastic bit broke off flush with the black plastic. Will this be a problem? It's just 0.5cm less now.
I will be buying service parts tomorrow, I will report back when I have put the edger back together.

could be a problem yes , a heat gun or the like is a good thing though , the nipple is needed for vacum, so maybe a good 2nd hand carb body , i think its been tried before to repair broken off ones but with little success . heat up the tubing and twist gently works for me

Hi Dave, that is good advice mate, we have seen that here before, and you are correct ....he will need a new or 2nd hand carby body, as that nipple is essential for the correct vacuum for the decomp valve.

Fully assembled it today and tried to get it going. I have the same problem now won't run for more than 10-15secs.
Things I've done.
* new g4 carby body, diaphragm, rings, needle etc
* starter seals
* manifold seals
* new decompressor
* new spark plug
* new air filter
* new head gasket
* new ignition leads

Hi QSR, The spark plug was clean but has very overpowering petrol smell Is this still the case? Does the plug look wet?

Not that wet, what is the correct spark plug for this unit? I went by the plug inside already.

Correct plug should be a CJ8(Champion) or BM6A(NGK)

Just a couple of thoughts.
1) I think this problem is carby related. I have fixed up a number of these edgers and the newer ones usually only have carby issues.
You never mentioned blowing the carby clean with compressed air. I would recommend if you havent. I have found issues in the past with genuine and aftermarket needles being used with genuine and after market primer caps. The black needles (aftermarket usually) are usually shorter and I hardly ever have a problem with them however the bright coloured needles are longer (usually) and if you dont use them with a genuine primer cap you will have loads of trouble with erratic running. So make sure you match genuine with genuine or aftermarket with aftermarket. Some dont like the aftermarket stuff but as long as you match the stuff up correctly it should be ok. 2) Minor hole in the float (check for liquid in the float) 3) A new primer cap might be required (clean it out with compressed air first) 4) Clean jet with compressed air. 5) maybe the exhaust is blocked so try another one. Keep at it. Jaffa

The plug currently inside is NGK BPMR6A. I'll fiddle around when I have time, I got the CJ8 plug on hand. Because I broke the decompressor valve nipple on the carby body I bought a new carby body and it came with a new poppet valve. Forgot to mention part of carby rebuild I got new primer cap, float, needle (all aftermarket).
If all else fails would the culprit be the piston and rings?

Hi QSR, I would recommend following Jaffa's advice with the carby before worrying about the piston and rings. Getting a stubborn 2 stroke to run is about following a series of suggestions (ie. the diagnosis) before moving on to the next parameter...chances are that the prob is carby related, and, with Jaffa's advice, may well fix the problem.
